Hawaiian Hala Fruit Pie

The Symphony of Flavors

The first time I crafted the Hawaiian Hala Fruit Pie was reminiscent of my initial encounter with a freshly baked French éclair, or a warm, sugar-dusted New Orleans-style beignet. The vibrant fusion of the tropical hala fruit with the zing of fresh pineapple and lemon juice is the centerpiece of this dessert. Enveloped within a buttery, flaky pie crust, it is a beautiful dance of flavors that captivate the palate.

It’s deceptively similar to a traditional American apple pie or a French Tarte Tatin but with an adventurous twist catering to a more tropical palate. Its vibrant flavor profile would pair delightfully with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream or a dollop of tangy whipped cream to compliment the innate sweetness of the pie.

Health Benefits of the Hala Fruit

Now, this isn’t simply a tale of tantalizing flavors. The Hawaiian Hala Fruit Pie, much like the rest of my favorite dishes, marries taste and nutrition. The star ingredient, hala fruit, is a fibrous delight that can effortlessly aid digestion. It’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals which can potentially enhance your health. Remember, a dessert that’s delicious and nutritious – that’s what makes it truly exceptional.

Embracing the irresistible charm of the Hawaiian Hala Fruit Pie doesn’t simply entail falling in love with its tropical exuberance it’s about valuing the amalgamation of nutrition, and tradition. This dessert bears testimony to my continuous endeavor to introduce recipes that don’t just tingle your taste-buds, but also nurture your well-being. So, whether it’s a sunny Sunday afternoon or a cozy Friday evening, enjoy a slice of this heavenly pie and whisk yourself away on a tropical culinary adventure.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups of fresh hala fruit slices
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup fresh pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 ready-made pie crust
  • 1 ready-made pie crust for topping or lattice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 large egg, beaten for egg wash
  • 1/4 cup coconut flakes, for garnish
ALLERGENS: Egg, Wheat, Coconut

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. In the meantime, lay out your ready-made pie crust in a pie dish and set it aside.

Step Two

In a large bowl, combine the fresh hala fruit slices with the granulated sugar. Once they are thoroughly mixed, let them sit for about 30 minutes until the sugar starts to draw out the juices from the fruit.

Step Three

In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch with the pineapple juice and lemon juice. Stir this mixture until the cornstarch is completely dissolved.

Step Four

Add the cornstarch mixture to the bow of hala fruit and sugar. Mix everything together until the fruit slices are well coated.

Step Five

Pour this fruit filling into the pie dish lined with your pie crust. Spread the fruit out as evenly as possible, then dot the surface with the cubed unsalted butter.

Step Six

Top your pie with the second pie crust. You can either lay it on whole and cut a few slits in the top to vent steam, or create a lattice pattern if you prefer. Once the top crust is on, trim any excess pastry, then crimp the edges to seal. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg for a glossy finish when baked.

Step Seven

Bake your pie in your preheated oven for roughly 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the fruit filling is bubbling. If your crust starts to brown too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil to prevent burning.

Step Eight

Once done, remove your pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 2 hours. This allows the filling to set so it won’t run when sliced. Finally, sprinkle the top with the coconut flakes for garnish before serving.

Step Nine

Your Hawaiian Hala Fruit Pie is now ready to be enjoyed!
