It beautifully encapsulates the unique tastes and textures of this wonderful fruit and coupled with the warm, comforting flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg and honey, this dessert is as unforgettable as NYC itself.
A Unique Fruit for a Unique Dessert
Commonly found in South Asia, the Grewia Asiatica fruit is a hidden gem in the world of fruits. It is often transformed into delicious jams and sherbets, a testament to its versatility. Rich in Vitamin C and dietary fiber, it adds a health kick to this indulgent dessert. And just like performing Shakespeare on stage, crafting this fruit into a beautiful pie requires love, patience and skill – a challenge I eagerly relish.

What You’ll Need
- 3 cups fresh Grewia Asiatica fruit
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 cups granulated white sugar
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 6 premade pie crusts
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Arrange one pie crust in a pie plate, set aside.
Step Two
In a large pot, combine the Grewia Asiatica fruit, lemon juice, white sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch. Stir until all ingredients are well mixed.
Step Three
Bring the fruit mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter till it is completely melted. Let it cool for a while.
Step Four
Pour the cooled mixture into the prepared pie crust. Cover with the second pie crust, fold the edges under, and crimp to seal. Cut several slits in the top crust for the steam to escape.
Step Five
Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash, sprinkle with a little sugar if desired.
Step Six
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Cool completely before slicing and serving. Repeat with the remaining pie crusts and filling.
