The amalgam of aromatic spices and flavors, paired with the tender richness of beef, recreates a classic Indian dish that’s easy to fall in love with.
The Flavor Rush
The richness of the Beef Fry recipe offers an unparalleled delight. Spiked with fiery chili, earthy coriander and the warmth of black pepper, every bite of this dish is an immediate flavor rush!
French Influence and Indian Flavors
While French and Creole cuisines are my forte, Indian cuisine has its own charm, particularly the way every spice plays its role in a dish. Integrating spices is an art, one that’s been perfected over centuries in Indian cooking. (Saveur)
What Led Me to This Recipe
My journey to discover the Beef Fry recipe was largely inspired by award-winning chef Floyd Cardoz. Known for his amazing fusion cuisine where he married Indian flavors with French culinary techniques, his style of cooking resonated with mine immensely.
This spicy and succulent dish closely mimics beef recipes found in South Indian cuisine like the Kerala-style beef roast. And it pairs spectacularly well with a garlicky Naan bread or aromatic biryani.
Indian Beef Fry is made using basic Indian spices, fresh beef, and some coconut oil. The optional inclusion of coconut slices adds an extra layer of taste and texture that I absolutely adore.
Every time I prepare this recipe, I am reminded of the true brilliance behind the blend of these simple ingredients resulting in a dish nothing short of a party for your taste buds. So for those seeking a culinary adventure without leaving the comfort of your own kitchen, this Beef Fry recipe is meant for you.
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs beef, cut into cubes
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 tablespoon red chili powder
- 2 tablespoons coriander powder
- 1 tablespoon black pepper powder
- 2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 4 medium onions, finely sliced
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 2 sprigs of curry leaves
- 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
- 4 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1/2 cup coconut slices (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Freshly chopped coriander leaves for garnish
Method
Step One
Take the beef cubes in a bowl, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder, and ginger-garlic paste. Mix everything well ensuring the beef is well coated with the spices. Afterwards, add vinegar and mix well again, then set it aside to marinate for at least 1 hour.
Step Two
In a large frying pan, heat the coconut oil over medium heat. Once hot, add mustard seeds. When the seeds start to splutter, add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown. Add the green chilies and curry leaves and sauté well.
Step Three
Add the marinated beef to the pan and elevate the heat to high. Sauté the beef on high heat for around 5 minutes. Then cover the pan and simmer on low heat for around 30-40 minutes or until the beef is cooked and tender, stirring occasionally.
Step Four
If you’re using coconut slices, add these and stir well. Continue to cook uncovered on medium to high heat until all the water evaporates and the beef becomes dark brown.
Step Five
Add salt to taste and mix well. Turn off the heat, sprinkle freshly chopped coriander leaves for garnish, and serve hot.
