I can’t help but get lost in the fond memories that arise when I think of preparing my Blackcurrant and Apple Crumble. It’s a recipe embedded with nostalgia and taste that connects me to my roots, yet brings in a contemporary flair. It’s the kind of dish that wraps you in comfort and whispers stories of different cultures, unique as they intertwine.

Blackcurrant and Apple Crumble

Flavours that Speak

This recipe is my way of marrying the best of both worlds – the warmth of southern cooking that I grew up around in Atlanta, and the vibrant, ever-present spice of my Nigerian heritage. The sharp, tangy blackcurrants meld beautifully with the apples’ crisp sweetness, creating a symphony of flavors that truly represents an Afro-Southern fusion. Yet, it’s more than just a recipe – it’s a culinary journey that bridges the space between African and Southern American foodways.

In the Heart of Health

There’s a beautifully deceptive simplicity to the Blackcurrant and Apple Crumble – beneath the delicious surface, it’s also a recipe packed with health benefits. Tucked away inside those juicy fruits are a wealth of antioxidants, essential nutrients that your body needs to maintain good health. The blackcurrants are abundant in Vitamin C that aids in immunity, while apples provide a good source of dietary fibers that help balance your digestive system. The oats sprinkling the crumble topping are a reservoir of crucial minerals and dietary fibers too. So, for those with a sweet tooth who also keep an eye on their wellness, this crumble is an indulgence you can feel good about.

Perfect Companions

As much as this crumble can shine on its own, it doesn’t shy away from being paired with other dishes. It has a harmonic liaison with creamy vanilla ice cream, the cold and creamy contrasts beautifully with the warm, textured crumble. For those desiring a fully decadent experience, a drizzle of homemade custard could take the crumble game to a whole new level. And, if this reminds you of traditional apple or berry pies, well, it’s meant to – the added twist of blackcurrant is what makes this crumble a genuinely unique delight.

I hope you find as much joy in preparing and savouring this Blackcurrant and Apple Crumble as I do, and that it warms your heart and soul as it has warmed mine endless times.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackcurrants
  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Gluten, Oats

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Get hold of a large mixing bowl and toss the blackcurrants and apples in it.

Step Two

In another bowl, mix granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the fruit and blend everything together properly.

Step Three

Once mixed, transfer the contents to a pan and let it rest for a while.

Step Four

In the meantime, you can prepare the crumble. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step Five

Add the melted butter to this bowl and mix until it starts to get a crumb-like texture.

Step Six

Evenly layer the crumble topping over the fruit in the pan, making sure you cover all the fruit.

Step Seven

Bake the crumble in your preheated oven for roughly 45 minutes or until the topping becomes a nice golden brown and the fruit starts bubbling.

Step Eight

Allow the crumble to rest and cool down for a few minutes after taking it out of the oven before serving. Enjoy it warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of custard.
