Cactus Pear Lemonade

A Modern Twist on a Classic Drink

A staple in Tex-Mex cuisine, the cactus pear, or prickly pear as it’s often called, lends a distinct, vibrant taste to this traditional lemonade. Embracing my love for introducing Southern recipes with a modern twist, this Cactus Pear Lemonade recipe is a testament to that. But there’s more to this desirable beverage than just great taste.

Natural Goodness, With Every Sip

The cactus pear isn’t just delicious, it’s packed full of amazing health benefits too. By incorporating cactus pears into this lemonade, we’re not only enhancing the taste but also enriching the drink with antioxidants, fiber and vitamin C. Freshly squeezed lemons add an extra boost of vitamin C and help improve digestion, perfect for those heavy barbecue meals.

Perfect Pairings

Though great on its own, the Cactus Pear Lemonade works wonders when paired with traditional Tex-Mex dishes. Wash down some Chiles Rellenos or a hearty Carne Asada with this cooling beverage. The tart, fruity notes are the perfect balance to the fiery flavors of such dishes. Besides, it’s also a fantastic mixer for summer cocktails if you’re in the mood for a ghost of a tequila kick!

In teaching my grade school students about nutrition, being able to introduce them to this wonderfully refreshing, healthy and delicious Cactus Pear Lemonade has been a joy. I invite you to try it, and experience this unique flavor fusion that’s delightfully Texan in spirit.

What You’ll Need

  • 8 ripe cactus pears
  • 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice (approximately 5 to 6 lemons)
  • 1 cup of white granulated sugar
  • 5 cups of water
  • Ice cubes
  • 6 lemon slices for garnish
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

Start off by peeling off the skin of the ripe cactus pears. Be careful while doing this as the cactus pears may have fine, small thorns. Once you have removed the skin, Dice them into smaller pieces.

Step Two

In a blender, combine the diced cactus pears and 1 cup of the water. Blend until you have a smooth consistency. Then, strain the mixture into a large pitcher to remove any remaining seeds. You should have about one cup of cactus pear juice.

Step Three

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved to make a simple syrup. Remove from heat and let cool.

Step Four

In your large pitcher, combine the cactus pear juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, and the remaining 3 cups of water. Stir well to combine.

Step Five

Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the cactus pear lemonade over. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice. Your refreshing cactus pear lemonade is now ready to be served and enjoyed!
