As a Midwesterner, there’s an innate pleasure in making dishes that boast of farm-fresh ingredients. Coupled with that is my fondness for comfort food recipes that yield both satiety and simple delight. In the confines of my own, humble kitchen, I love experimenting and unearthing culinary treasures, one of which is the vibrantly-colored Canistels and Nutmeg Porridge.

Canistels and Nutmeg Porridge

A Taste of the Tropics

The jubilant yellow of the Canistels, a fruit that isn’t commonly found in the heartland of Nebraska, brings a sort of magic to this recipe. While it might seem unconventional to mix a tropical fruit like Canistels with nutmeg and oats, it’s a delicious nod to how cuisine can transcend boundaries, bringing in a taste of the tropics to the Midwestern table. The subtlety of the nutmeg intertwined with the slight sweetness of the Canistels creates an elevated porridge experience. This porridge mirrors the warmth of an Apple Pie, hence making it a perfect pair for Grandma Ople’s apple pie.

Nurturing Your Health

Not only is the Canistels and Nutmeg Porridge an adventure for your taste buds, it’s also a nurturing treat to your body. The Canistels (also known as Eggfruit), are rich in carotenoids, known for their eye health benefits [source]. Moreover, the oats, loaded with fiber, contribute to better digestion and heart health [source]. The almonds, laced with vitamins and minerals, adds a layer of crunchiness to the porridge and boosts overall health.

A Homely Tradition

I can easily imagine Canistels and Nutmeg Porridge becoming a loved breakfast staple for my future large family. The hearty essence of oats mingled with a hint of Nutmeg captures the spirit of heartland cooking I so cherish. It’s a thrilling reminder that the kitchen is a sanctuary much cherished in my faith and the bringing together of family around a table is food for the soul.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups of fresh Canistels pulp
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup of chopped almonds
  • Honey to taste
ALLERGENS: milk, oats, almonds

Method

Step One

Start by preparing the canistels. Scoop out the pulp from fresh canistels to get 2 cups. Discard the skin and the seed inside.

Step Two

Pour 4 cups of milk in a large saucepan and place it over medium heat. Add the canistels pulp to the milk.

Step Three

Next, add 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats to the saucepan. Stir everything together until well mixed.

Step Four

Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract to the mixture. Also, add 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg for a spicy flavor. Stir everything again to combine.

Step Five

Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes, until the oats are cooked and have absorbed most of the milk.

Step Six

While waiting for the porridge to cook, chop a 1/4 cup of almonds.

Step Seven

Once the porridge is ready, pour it into individual bowls. Top each bowl with some of the chopped almonds and drizzle honey to taste.

Step Eight

Serve your Canistels and Nutmeg Porridge while it’s still warm. Enjoy this healthy and delicious breakfast!
