There’s something magical, nostalgically Midwestern, about the timeless Cranberry Apple Pie. Its tangy sweetness seems to transport you back to simpler, slower days, where autumn leaves fell like confetti and the smell of bakery wafting in the air meant the holidays were just around the corner.

Cranberry Apple Pie

Comfort Food Refined

This Cranberry Apple Pie is, to me, comfort food refined. Drawing on my Nebraska roots, where the cold winters seem to cry out for the warmth of pies and stews, I’ve always found solace in recreating in my kitchen the hearty and heartwarming recipes that have been passed down in my family. Similar to traditional apple pies or cranberry nut breads, this recipe carries the taste and memories of home.

Good for Your Palate and Your Body

In addition to its mouthwatering taste, the Cranberry Apple Pie comes with a list of nutritional benefits that appeals to the health-conscious. Fresh cranberries and apples, the stars of this recipe, are powerhouses of vitamins and antioxidants. They not only keep you satiated but also support your overall wellness. Adding a slice of this pie to your tea-time or holiday table not only means delighting your taste buds, but subtly caring for your health as well.

While rich in heritage and flavour, our Cranberry Apple Pie can be a versatile addition to your dining table. Its sweet and tart combination pairs wonderfully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or even alongside a light fruit salad. The pie has a unique way of fitting into just about any meal, making it a truly valuable recipe to master.

The Perfect Pie to Share

For me, a big part of food and cooking revolves around sharing. As an avid churchgoer with a fondness for large family gatherings, I have often found that a pie, like this one, has an incredible way of bringing people together. And so, from my family to yours, the Cranberry Apple Pie is a recipe that I love and hope you will, too. Embrace the gift of good food, and create your own special memories – one slice at a time.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon butter, diced
  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar, for dusting
ALLERGENS: wheat (all-purpose flour), gluten (all-purpose flour), eggs (egg white), milk (butter)

Method

Step One

Start by preheating your oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Step Two

In a large bowl, combine the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Add the sliced apples, cranberries, and lemon juice, and toss until well coated.

Step Three

Prepare the pie pastry and lay one of the pie crusts into a 9 inch pie plate. Spoon the apple-cranberry mixture into the pie crust and dot with cubes of butter.

Step Four

Place the second pie crust on top of the filling. Press the edges of the two crusts together to seal, and then make small cuts in the top of the pie crust to vent steam while baking.

Step Five

In a small bowl, beat the egg white and water together. Brush this over the top crust of the pie, then sprinkle with additional sugar to give the pie a shiny, sugary crust.

Step Six

Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until apples are tender and the crust is golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack before serving.
