The kitchen wafts with that peculiar aroma, crisp yet comforting, foreign yet familiar. It’s the delightful scent of feijoa and apple crumble sizzling gently in the oven. This is a dish that captivates my passion for exploring new flavors and connecting with traditional roots. It’s a sweet homage to my upbringing in Montana, yet tweaked with the exotic allure of the feijoa fruit, a nod to my constant pursuit for culinary novelty.

Feijoa and Apple Crumble

A Healthful Indulgence

Part of what makes the feijoa and apple crumble recipe so appealing, aside from its exceptionally delightful taste, is its health benefit potential. The feijoa fruit, or ‘pineapple guava’ as it’s sometimes called, is a powerhouse of vitamins and antioxidants. Teamed with the soluble fibers in the apples, it truly transforms the idea of a guilt-ridden desert into a healthful indulgence. Not to mention, this delectable dessert fills your home with such a wonderful aroma, it’s easy to feel a sense of serenity and contentment as it bakes away.

Cultural Fusion

In union with apple, a staple used generously in many American dessert classics, feijoa lends the dish an international flair. This recipe is a modern rendition of the good old American apple crumble and the famous New Zealand feijoa-based desserts. The final result: a cross between a pie and a crumble, fully embodying the gastronomic ethos of merging cultures.

Though certainly a dessert to be savored solo, this crumble can also complement several meals. I’ve found that it pairs particularly well with a simple, wholesome main like Roasted Chicken with Lemon and Thyme or a slow-cooked Venison Stew with Tomato. Lighter than most pies but rich enough to make a grand finale, it serves as the perfect sweet note to end a savory meal.

Creating this feijoa and apple crumble has helped me explore new culinary territories while reconnecting with my own past. The world is a melange of flavors waiting to be experienced, and as a chef driven by wanderlust, I can’t wait to bring you along this delicious journey!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups feijoa pulp
  • 4 medium-sized apples, peeled and cored
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Gluten

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Clean the feijoas and scoop out the pulp until you have 2 cups full. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into thin slices.

Step Two

Put the sliced apples, feijoa pulp, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Toss the fruits in this mixture until they are well coated. Transfer this mixture to a sizeable and shallow baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step Three

In another bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Cut the butter into small pieces, add it to the bowl, and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingertips until the mixture becomes crumbly.

Step Four

Spread this crumbly topping evenly over the fruit mixture in the baking dish. Gently press it down.

Step Five

Put the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for around 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. Let the crumble cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Feijoa and apple crumble!
