There’s a hint of nostalgia and a dash of innovation whipped into every sip of this Feijoa, Banana and Spinach Smoothie. Being raised in a household where traditional New England fare was lovingly fused with heartwarming Irish recipes, I learned early that cuisine has an extended family tree. This recipe bolsters my belief in that culinary kinship, inviting you to a delightful mix of familiar comfort and exciting new flavors.
Blend of Tradition and Trends
On a rainy Boston afternoon, the warmth of my grandparents’ rich Irish stews beckons me. They’ve always held firm to the Irish adage: “Food should be made with a sprinkle of love”. Practicing this principle, I find myself blending the aromas of my upbringing with the spirited soul of the present day in my recipes.
A Feijoa, Banana and Spinach smoothie is precisely one of such symphony – a recipe that blends the wholesome ideas of my grandparents’ cooking with the vibrant taste palettes of millennials.
Health Benefits and Flavorful Pairings
Why is this smoothie so much more than its delectable taste? It’s a powerhouse of vital nutrients from vitamin C in oranges, fiber in bananas, high antioxidant levels in feijoas, and a healthy serve of iron and calcium from the spinach. The crowning glory, Greek yogurt, comes with a impressive dose of protein and probiotics for a healthier gut. A generous drizzle of honey brings forth that sweet finishing touch, making this healthy concoction a feast for your taste-buds.
This lush green smoothie is a breakfast in itself, but pair it up with a traditional Irish soda bread and you have yourself a morning fit for a king! For those lighter moments, a breezy Mediterranean salad for lunch or a spice-loaded Mexican fish taco would be a savoury companion to this fruity smoothie.
So here it is – a nod towards the food ethos of my ancestors, concocted in the rhythmic hum of my blender. Try out this Feijoa, Banana and Spinach smoothie recipe – it’s a blend of the past and present that we don’t just eat, but live.
What You’ll Need
- 3 cups freshly squeezed orange juice
- 3 ripe bananas
- 18 medium-size ripe feijoas
- 3 cups baby spinach leaves
- 1 1/2 cup Greek yoghurt
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 12 ice cubes
Method
Step One
Start by squeezing fresh oranges until you have approximately 3 cups of juice. Set it aside for now.
Step Two
Peel the ripe bananas and place them into a blender. Meanwhile, scoop the flesh out of the feijoas using a spoon and add it to the blender.
Step Three
Add the freshly squeezed orange juice to the blender, along with the bananas and feijoas.
Step Four
Now, put the three cups of baby spinach leaves into the blender. It is recommended to use fresh baby spinach for a smoother blend and a better taste.
Step Five
Pour in the Greek yoghurt. This should be about one and a half cups. You can use either low-fat or full-fat depending on your preference.
Step Six
Add the honey to the mixture in the blender. This should be about three tablespoons, but you could adjust it according to your preferred level of sweetness.
Step Seven
Lastly, drop in the 12 ice cubes and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Step Eight
Serve the smoothie immediately. If you’d like, you can garnish it with some sliced feijoa or a sprinkle of chia seeds for extra flavor and benefits. Enjoy your healthy and refreshing Feijoa, banana and spinach smoothie!
