This dessert, with its alluring balance of textures and flavors, transported me to the amalgamation of my two culinary worlds. Memories of helping my mom in the kitchen, roasting stains of barbecue from late summer Atlanta cookouts, and the tantalizing aroma of West African spices wafting through our house—this Fig and Almond Tarte Tatin was reminiscent of all those beautiful moments.

Fig and Almond Tarte Tatin

Fusing Flavors and Tradition

There is something inherently satisfying about fusing my African culinary heritage with Southern cooking, all wrapped in a French classic dessert. The crunch of the almonds thrums in harmony with the lush, jammy softness of the caramelized figs, while the almond liqueur offers an almost ethereal note that pulls everything together.

The Powerhouse of Health Benefits

This dessert, though indulgent, also tucks in a number of health benefits. Figs, star of the dish, are known for their high fiber content and a rich source of antioxidants. Almonds on the other hand, are celebrated for their heart-healthy fats and proteins. While it’s certainly no substitute for a balanced meal, this tarte tatin has a tantalizing edge of nutrition to justify an extra slice.

If you resonate with a Tarte Tatin or a warm Peach Cobbler, this Fig and Almond Tarte Tatin will captivate your taste buds. Being a lawyer married to this mesmerizing culinary world, I can vouch for this recipe’s excellent pairing with a succulent roast joint, or even standing on its own as a memorable dessert at your next dinner party.

So the next time you find yourself yearning for a dessert that seamlessly marries health, comfort, and startlingly good taste, choose this Fig and Almond Tarte Tatin. Here’s to adventurous cooking and heartwarming memories at the dinner table!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup ground almonds
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 12 fresh figs, halved
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup almond liqueur
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Almond, Milk, Egg

Method

Step One

In a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and ground almonds.

Step Two

Blend the cold unsalted butter into the flour and almond mixture until it forms crumbs.

Step Three

Stir in the granulated sugar and salt. Mix until thoroughly combined.

Step Four

Crack the eggs into the mixture and mix well to form a soft dough. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for at least 1 hour.

Step Five

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Arrange the halved figs, cut side down, in a 9-inch diameter tart pan with a removable bottom.

Step Six

Sprinkle the brown sugar over the figs and drizzle with the almond liqueur.

Step Seven

Take the chilled dough and roll it out to fit the top of the tart pan. Place the dough over the figs and tuck the edges in around the figs.

Step Eight

Bake the tarte tatin for about 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and the figs are soft and caramelized.

Step Nine

Allow the tart to cool for a few minutes, then run a sharp knife around the edge of the tart to loosen it. Place a serving plate over the top of the tart and, holding both the plate and the tart pan, invert the tart onto the plate.

Step Ten

Sprinkle the toasted sliced almonds over the top. Slice and serve the tart warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired. Enjoy your Fig and Almond Tarte Tatin!
