Fingered Citron Compote

When I first encountered the Fingered Citron Compote recipe, I was immediately intrigued. Growing up in California, I was always surrounded by fresh produce, thanks to the fertile valleys and the state’s year-round sunshine. This dish brings out the very best flavors of the citron, a fruit that’s often underappreciated but incredibly versatile and nutritious.

The Joy of Fingered Citron

Fingered citron, also known as Buddha’s hand, is a remarkable fruit. Its zesty rind and fragrant aroma make it a standout in any kitchen. The compote allows the natural essence of the citron to shine while being complemented by the warmth of cinnamon and star anise, the sweetness of honey, and the comforting touch of vanilla bean. The result is a harmony of flavors that’s both surprising and delightful.

Health Benefits and Versatility

Fingered citron is more than just a unique fruit; it’s packed with vitamins and antioxidants. The citrus family is renowned for its immune-boosting properties, and citron is no exception. This compote is a healthier alternative to many sugar-laden preserves, thanks to the natural sweetness of honey and the modest use of sugar. The addition of lemon juice not only enhances the flavor but also adds an extra dose of vitamin C.

This Fingered Citron Compote is incredibly versatile. It can be a delightful topping for yogurt or oatmeal, or spread on toast for a refreshing breakfast. It pairs wonderfully with cheeses and charcuterie, making it an elegant addition to any appetizer platter. You can even serve it alongside roasted meats or vegetables for a sweet and tangy contrast.

If you’re a fan of citrus marmalades or fruit preserves, you’ll find this compote to be a refreshing alternative. It’s similar in texture but stands out with its distinctive taste and aroma. This recipe is a reminder of why I love cooking with fresh, local ingredients—every bite brings back memories of the vibrant produce markets in California.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 Fingered Citrons (approx. 1 pound)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
ALLERGENS: Honey, Cinnamon, Star Anise, Vanilla, Lemon

Method

Step One

Cut the fingered citrons into thin slices, removing any seeds. If the peel is particularly thick, you may choose to trim some of it away but leave most for flavor and texture.

Step Two

In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, honey, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step Three

Add the cinnamon stick, star anise pods, and the split and scraped vanilla bean to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.

Step Four

Add the sliced fingered citrons to the saucepan. Continue to simmer for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and the citron slices are tender.

Step Five

Stir in the lemon juice and salt. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step Six

Remove the saucepan from heat and let the compote cool slightly. Remove the cinnamon stick, star anise pods, and the vanilla bean before transferring the compote to a jar or container.

Step Seven

Store the compote in the refrigerator. Serve it over yogurt, pancakes, or as a topping for desserts. Enjoy your Fingered Citron Compote!
