Fish in Green Peas Gravy

Beckoning the Comfort of Home-Cooking

Why do I love the Fish in Green Peas Gravy? Simple. It takes me back to the basic, heart-warming appeal of home-cooked meals while also alluring my appetite with its rich, complex depth of flavors. Sure, there might not be any similarity with a clam chowder or a lobster roll, but the use of the white fish fillets marinated in spices evokes the same freshness and ever-enchanting allure of seafood I hold dear.

Masterful Fusion of Fine Ingredients and Precise Spicing

Headlining the recipe is the fish, naturally, but every contributing ingredient brings their own unique charm, creating a balance that is both satisfying and indulgent. The choice of white fish fillets marinated in a mix of turmeric, cumin and coriander powder, submerged in a lush gravy of chopped tomatoes, green peas, and a delicately spiced masala blend, results in a dish that is heavy on taste yet surprisingly light on the digestive system. What follows each mouthful is a gentle, peppery aftertaste, courtesy of the finely chopped green chillies – a sensation I’ve come to look forward to each time.

This recipe pairs perfectly with a simple side of basmati rice or naan bread and perhaps a cucumber raita to balance the heat, if you’re not too familiar with the Indian cuisine’s commonly robust spice levels.

I hope my take on Fish in Green Peas Gravy adds a touch of spice and variety to your routine, while also bringing you as much joy and satisfaction as it brings to mine – especially on chilled Maine days when some extra heat is most welcome. Bon Appétit!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 lbs white fish fillet
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 inch piece of ginger
  • 6 cloves of garlic
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped for garnish
ALLERGENS: Fish

Method

Step One

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion into the pan and sauté until it turns golden brown.

Step Two

Paste the ginger, garlic and green chillies in a grinder. Add this paste to the sautéed onions and stir for a couple of minutes until the raw smell disappears.

Step Three

Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan. Continue to sauté until the tomatoes are fully cooked and the oil begins to separate from the gravy.

Step Four

Now it’s time to add your spices. Combine the turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder and garam masala powder to the mixture in the pan. Cook the resulting mixture on low heat for around 5 minutes, remember to stir occasionally.

Step Five

Add the green peas into the pan, followed by the 2 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to allow it to simmer.

Step Six

Place the fish fillets in the simmering gravy, making sure they’re covered well. Cook covered on low heat for about 10-15 minutes or until the fish is done.

Step Seven

Add salt according to your taste preference. Sprinkle a bunch of finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves on top for garnish.

Step Eight

Allow the flavors to meld together on low heat for few more minutes and then turn off the heat. Your delicious Fish in Green Peas Gravy is ready to serve. Enjoy!
