Growing up on the open plains of Montana, my culinary journey was shaped largely by the flavors native to the land – elk, rainbow trout, wild huckleberries, buffalo berries, and many more. But my love for food extends beyond the native produce, extending to discovering and experimenting with different and unusual dishes from around the world. That’s why one of my personal favorite recipes is the Grilled Plantains, a delightful, fruit-centered dish that burst with sweet, tropical flavors. Each delectable ingredient in the Grilled Plantains recipe comes together to create a beautiful blend of health and flavor, invoking a sunny beachside memory every time.
A Melting Pot of Nutrients
Being an advocate for healthy living, I love incorporating the Grilled Plantains into my daily diet. Packed with potassium, fiber, and vitamin A, plantains contribute significantly towards boosting the body’s immune system and maintaining good heart health. When paired with nutrient-rich butter, the benefits only increase. Butter, far from being just a simple taste enhancer, is a surprisingly healthy source of Vitamins A and E, offering a great way to support skin health and eye health. The hint of honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg not only elevated the flavor profile of the dish but also boosts its health benefits with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
A Symphony of Flavor
When paired with a savory, high-protein dish like a Bison burger or a Venison steak, the sweetness of the Grilled Plantains beautifully balances out the flavors, creating a rich, wholesome meal. The sweetness of the ripe plantains caramelized in brown sugar, the richness of the butter, the zing of the cinnamon, and just a hint of salt all mingle together, creating a play of flavors that leaves your palate longing for more. If you’re a dessert lover, you’ll find the Grilled Plantains to be a worthy rival to traditional pies and tarts, and a healthier alternative too!
Even though I’m thousands of miles away from the tropical origin of plantains, this humble fruit has found a special place on the Montana plains and in my kitchen. It’s far removed from the bison burgers and huckleberry pies, but it’s a beautiful testament to the blend of tradition and innovation that defines my culinary journey. If I could invite you all to my ranch sometime, a plate of Grilled Plantains would definitely feature on the menu. Until then, this recipe is my gift to you, a taste of the tropics delivered from the heart of Montana.
What You’ll Need
- 6 ripe plantains
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup honey
Method
Step One
Start by preheating your grill to a medium heat. While the grill is preheating, peel the plantains and slice them lengthwise into halves. Set them aside.
Step Two
In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Mix them all together until you create a well-blended mixture.
Step Three
Brush the plantains generously on both sides using the prepared butter and sugar mixture. Make sure all the plantains are well coated to enhance their flavor.
Step Four
Arrange the plantains on the preheated grill. Grill them for about 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until they turn caramelized and tender.
Step Five
Once the plantains are fully cooked, remove them from the grill and drizzle them with honey. Serve your grilled plantains while warm for the best taste.
