Indonesian Cinnamon Baked Apples effortlessly blend an earthy spice palette with succulent fruit, creating a dessert that is both decadent and naturally sweet. This recipe plays upon my passion for infusing distinctly American flavors with international tones. It’s a treat that borrows from the multitude of flavors across the globe, yet can be crafted after a day hiking the Rockies, sharing laughter and stories around the campfire.

Indonesian Cinnamon Baked Apples

The Comfort of Apples

Apples, inherently reminiscent of comfort and nostalgia, provide not only the hearty centerpiece to this dessert, but also a wealth of health benefits. Studies have linked regular apple consumption to everything from heart health to improved brain function. Beyond that, this dish provides a serving of fiber and vitamin C, all while satisfying a sweet tooth.

Elevated by Indonesian Cinnamon

The inclusion of Indonesian cinnamon takes these baked apples from everyday to exotic. This cinnamon is robust and sweet, a perfect spice to blend with the tartness of the apples. Research suggests it may support stable blood sugar levels, offering a health boosting bonus alongside its distinctive flavor.

This Indonesian Cinnamon Baked Apples recipe may seem a far cry from my everyday trout and game recipes, yet its roots within comfort food and accessible ingredients are the same. Like the best of my dishes, it’s hearty, tasty, and contains layers of complexity beneath a simple exterior.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a traditional apple pie or apple crisp, this dessert will be both familiar and a delightful departure. It pairs wonderfully with classics like roasted pork, or sits comfortably next to a cup of coffee as a breakfast treat. Mixed in are the flavors of a distant locale, keeping your taste buds engaged and curious, while still grounded in familiar comfort.

So, whether you’ve spent the day fishing for trout or enjoying the great outdoors in your own way, you’ll come home to a dessert that’s equally enjoyable to make as it is to eat. Get your peeler ready, preheat the oven, and bring a touch of Indonesia into your Rocky Mountain kitchen.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 crisp apples
  • 1 cup of raisins or currants
  • 1 cup of raw sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of Indonesian cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups of apple cider
ALLERGENS: Apples, raisins, currants, unsalted butter

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).

Step Two

Wash the apples and remove the cores without breaking through the bottom of the apples. This leaves a pocket to hold the raisins and sugar. Place the apples in a baking dish.

Step Three

In a medium bowl, combine the raisins (or currants), raw sugar, Indonesian cinnamon powder, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Mix these ingredients together until well combined.

Step Four

Fill each apple with this mixture, pressing the filling down as you add it to make sure the apples are well stuffed. If any filling is left over, simply sprinkle it around the apples in the dish.

Step Five

Dot the tops of the filled apples with the unsalted butter, since this will help to keep the apples moist as they bake.

Step Six

Pour the apple cider into the bottom of the baking dish, then bake the apples for about one hour, or until they are tender and golden. You may baste the apples occasionally with the liquid at the bottom of the dish to prevent them from drying out.

Step Seven

Once done, remove from the oven and allow them to cool before serving. The Indonesian Cinnamon Baked Apples can be served warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
