About Irish Soda Bread

“`HTML

Warm, fragrant, and steeped in tradition—there’s no bread quite like Irish Soda Bread. A food that’s been woven into the very fabric of Irish culture over centuries, this is a bread that immediately invokes thoughts of home and comfort. That sense of nostalgia isn’t limited to Ireland, it has traveled the world, and for good reason.

Familiar, yet Unique

This bread, closely related to other traditional quick breads, is unmistakably unique. Has the same inviting character as a well-made Scottish Bannock or a Classic American Salt-rising Bread. Yet, in its composition, it retains its own vibrant identity. The gentle twang of buttermilk, the playful sweetness of sugar, and the humble staple that is baking soda all harmonize in the oven to produce something that is familiar, yet delightfully unique: our Irish Soda Bread.

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, divided
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Milk, Egg

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.

Step Two

In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg.

Step Three

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet.

Step Four

In a small bowl, combine melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.

Step Five

Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Check for doneness after 30 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.
