One of my all-time favorite recipes has got to be the tantalizingly sweet and fragrant Jabuticaba Pie. Hailing from Brazil, the Jabuticaba is an exotic fruit that is not only delightfully flavorful, but also brimming full of potent antioxidants. It is these nutritional qualities, coupled with the unique taste and texture, that make it the star ingredient of this distinctive pie. It truly is a magical fusion of southern comfort and health-consciousness, much like the sunny valleys of California where I hail from.

Jabuticaba Pie

A Tribute to Childhood Memories

One of the reasons why the Jabuticaba Pie is so dear to my heart, is that it reminds me of my childhood. The freshly baked pies from our family kitchen and the time spent handpicking fruits from the farm, has undoubtedly influenced my palette and style of cooking. The Jabuticaba Pie, similar to a classic American cherry pie, takes me on a nostalgic journey back to those simpler times, and the relaxing Californian countryside.

Nutrition-Rich Comfort Food

As a mother of three adopted children, I have always aimed to incorporate a balance between nutrition and taste in my recipes. The Jabuticaba pie strikes this balance perfectly. Not only is it a comfort food that everyone loves, but it’s also packed with a nutritional punch. Jabuticaba berries are known for their high antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory properties that can contribute to overall well-being. Hence, you can indulge in this pie without any guilt.

I also love how versatile this pie is. While it’s delicious enough to be enjoyed on its own, it pairs beautifully with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream for a treat that’s simply divine. Or, you could even serve it with a lovely Endive and Blue Cheese salad for a delightful sweet and savory combo.

As a personal touch, I love adding a hint of lemon zest to the recipe: not only does it add a refreshingly zingy note, it also enhances the berry’s natural flavors bringing forth a pie that’s truly exceptional.

So, whether you’re planning to wow guests at your next dinner party, or simply looking for a comforting and nutritious dessert to share with your family, the Jabuticaba Pie is an absolute winner in my book. I hope it brings the same joy and comfort to your kitchen as it does to mine!

What You’ll Need

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup chilled butter, diced
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons ice water
  • 1.5 cups of Jabuticaba berries
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons buttter
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Gluten, Milk

Method

Step One

Start by preparing the crust. Combine 1.5 cups of all-purpose flour with half a cup of chilled, diced butter in a bowl. With clean hands or a pastry cutter, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse bread crumbs. Add in the 2 tablespoons of white sugar and half a teaspoon of salt.

Step Two

Slowly add in the 4 tablespoons of ice water, a tablespoon at a time. Mix this in until a ball of dough forms. Please, don’t knead the dough, as this will make it tough. Cover the dough in plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

Step Three

While the dough is chilling, you can prepare the Jabuticaba filling. Rinse 1.5 cups of Jabuticaba berries and place them in a pan. Add 1 cup white sugar to the pan, along with 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 0.5 teaspoons grated lemon zest. Mix the contents until they are thoroughly combined and leave it to simmer over medium heat until the berries have broken down and the mixture has thickened.

Step Four

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Roll out your dough into a 12-inch circle on a lightly floured surface. Then carefully transfer it into a 9-inch pie dish. Pour the Jabuticaba mixture into the pie shell and dot the top with the 2 tablespoons of butter.

Step Five

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Let it cool for at least an hour before serving to let the filling set.
