Dear, darlings! Today I’m going to introduce you to a dish that I’ve fallen in love with – the Jambul and Apple Crumble. This delightful combination of jambul (also known as jamun), a lovely fruit loaded with health benefits, and apples, gives this dessert a unique, refreshing edge. The explosion of flavors – a little sweet, slightly tangy, married into a beautiful crumble is nothing less than a sensual experience. For your viewing pleasure, here is an image of this glorious dish:
The Southern Touch
Now, y’all know that my roots tap down deep in the Southern soil. While this Jambul and Apple Crumble may not be a Southern belle like myself, the touch of brown sugar and cinnamon gives this dish a Southern touch. It took me back to my childhood, evoking memories of the apple pies my Mama used to bake on long summer afternoons. It’s making good use of what’s locally available, and adding a little sweetness – just like a Southern cook would do!
Perfect Pairings
As a standalone dish, this crumble makes a perfect end to any meal. But if you want to elevate the gastronomic pleasure, pairing it with [vanilla ice cream](https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2018/07/french-vanilla-ice-cream.html) is a winning move. The cold creaminess of the ice cream against the warm, juicy, crumbly dessert, is really the stuff of dreams. But if you’re in the mood to try something different, why not serve this crumble with [cedar-planked salmon](https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/cedar-planked-salmon-365437)?
That’s not all, folks! Did I mention the health benefits of this incredible dish? Jamun is packed with antioxidants, and is known to be great for diabetics. So not only is this dessert utterly delightful, it’s also got a health factor!
To sum it all up, what makes me love this Jambul and Apple Crumble recipe is its perfect blend of flavors, the surprise ingredient of jambul, the reminiscence of my homeland, and its simplicity. It’s comfortable and a bit adventurous, sweet with a bit of edge – just like life in the South!
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of fresh Jambul (Jamun) fruit
- 2 large Apples
- 1 cup of granulated Sugar
- 2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice
- 1 teaspoon of ground Cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground Nutmeg
- 1 cup of All-purpose Flour
- 1 cup of Rolled Oats
- 1/2 cup of Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup of unsalted Butter, softened
- 1/4 teaspoon of Salt
- Vanilla Ice Cream, for serving (optional)
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). While the oven is heating, wash and dry the Jambul and Apples. Cut the apple into thin slices, removing the core in the process. Leave the Jambul whole.
Step Two
Place the Jambul and Apple slices in a large bowl. Add the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the bowl. Toss everything together until the fruit is evenly coated. Set the bowl aside.
Step Three
In another bowl, mix together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add the softened butter to the mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry blender to mix everything until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step Four
Place the fruit mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the flour and oats mixture evenly over the fruit, ensuring all the fruit is covered. Place the baking dish into the preheated oven.
Step Five
Bake the Jambul and Apple Crumble for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. Once done, remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
Step Six
For an extra treat, serve the Jambul and Apple Crumble warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Enjoy!
