Whenever I have a surplus of jostaberries, the first recipe I turn to is my delicious Jostaberry Pie. Energized by the flavors of my Cuban and Spanish heritage, my Jostaberry Pie does a little dance between the tartness of the berry and the sweetness of the crust—a performance that never fails to captivate the senses.

Delicious homemade Jostaberry Pie

The Joy of Jostaberries

What I find particularly enchanting about this recipe is the star ingredient itself, the jostaberry. This berry is more than just a mouthful of tart delight; it’s like an invitation to explore a melange of flavors when delicately enveloped in a tender, flaky pie crust. But, beyond its sweet-tart magnificence, the jostaberry also boasts an abundance of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to your overall health.

Similar to gooseberries, currants, and blackberries, the jostaberry offers a unique taste experience. So if you’re a fan of any of these fruits, my Jostaberry Pie will surely charm you.

Perfect Pairings

A slice of Jostaberry Pie is a pleasure in its own right, but pairing it with the right companion can turn a simple dessert into a grand finale of a meal. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is a classic accompaniment, while a little dollop of whipped cream adds a delightful creamy contrast to the tarts of the berries. For an adult twist, serve it with a glass of sweet Moscato or even a tropical cocktail—a nod to my Caribbean roots.

This fruity dessert could alternatively be a sweet counterpoint to some savory Spanish tapas, modifying the culinary journey from Spain’s bustling tabernas to the luxurious simplicity of home.

So, whether you’re new to baking or a seasoned kitchen maestro, I encourage you to indulge in the bold taste of jostaberries with this pie. Remember to serve it with love, and most importantly, enjoy every bite.

I am excited to share my world of flavors, one recipe at a time. To a sweet feast, and happier hearts!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups of Jostaberries
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 package of pre-made pie crust
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • Additional sugar for sprinkling
ALLERGENS: cornstarch, butter, pre-made pie crust, egg, milk

Method

Step One

First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Step Two

Next, in a large bowl, combine the Jostaberries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon juice. Gently stir until the berries are well coated.

Step Three

Then, unroll one of your pre-made pie crusts and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Spoon the berry mixture into the crust and dot it with pieces of butter.

Step Four

Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the filling. Crimp the edges to seal the pie, and make several slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

Step Five

In a small bowl, beat together the egg and milk to make an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the top of the pie, then sprinkle with additional sugar.

Step Six

Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden and you can see the filling bubbling. You may want to put a baking sheet underneath the pie to catch any drips.

Step Seven

Allow the pie to cool completely before cutting and serving to allow the filling to set. Enjoy your delicious homemade Jostaberry Pie!
