From the shores of Maine, I often found myself drifting towards the taste of the sea. But today, let’s shift our taste buds from the saline breeze and journey through a delightful fruity elixir: the Jostaberry Smoothie. This is a wonderful recipe, and I think my love for it stems from its beautiful marriage of unique ingredients and a multitude of health benefits.
A Fresh Take on Fruit Smoothies
Jostaberry Smoothie, an uncommon name for sure, it is a unique blend that always takes me back to those bright summer weekends with my daughters Erin and Samantha. We would often veer away from our conventional seafood delights and engage in creating something a little sweeter. The jostaberry, a hybrid between a black currant and gooseberry, packs in a punch of tanginess, making this smoothie an unexpected twist to the traditional smoothie recipes found in most Bon Appétit cookbooks.
The Healthful Jostaberry
Health-wise, the Jostaberry Smoothie certainly holds its ground. The jostaberry is filled with antioxidants and vitamins, particularly Vitamin C. Mixed with the richness of Greek yogurt and the added sweetness of honey, you not only get a delightful taste but also some great health benefits. Moreover, the inclusion of almond milk makes this smoothie a great option for those maintaining a vegan diet. This recipe is reminiscent of the popular ‘Berries and Banana Smoothie‘, but the unique taste of jostaberries adds a zing that makes the Jostaberry Smoothie truly special. This smoothie pairs well with a light bagel or a heartening oatmeal breakfast. It’s a refreshing change from my regular gastronomic experiments while delivering a healthy blend that is both filling and tasty. Beyond doubt, the Jostaberry Smoothie is a recipe that merits attention and a definite must-try.
What You’ll Need
- 3 cups fresh jostaberries
- 2 medium sized bananas
- 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
- 1.5 cups plain Greek yogurt
- 3 tablespoons honey or to taste
- 1.5 cups of Ice
Method
Step One
Begin by washing your 3 cups of fresh jostaberries thoroughly to remove any dirt or grit. Make sure to drain and dry them well.
Step Two
Next, peel your 2 medium sized bananas and break them into smaller pieces. This will make the blending process easier afterwards.
Step Three
Take out your blender and add in your prepped jostaberries and banana pieces. Add in your 2 cups of unsweetened almond milk and 1.5 cups of plain Greek yogurt into the blender as well.
Step Four
Now, sweeten your smoothie to taste by adding in 3 tablespoons of honey (or more if you prefer a sweeter smoothie).
Step Five
Finally, to give your smoothie a nice chilled touch, add in your 1.5 cups of ice before blending everything together until the mixture is smooth and creamy. You might need to pause and scrape down the sides of the blender to ensure that everything is well blended.
Step Six
Pour your freshly made Jostaberry Smoothie into glasses and enjoy! If desired, you can garnish the smoothie with a few extra jostaberries on top before serving.
