Kiwifruit Salsa

One remarkable addition to the adventure that epitomizes my culinary journey has been ‘Kiwifruit Salsa’, a delightful blend of a number of fresh fruits and spices. By adding a Midwestern spin on a typically Latin American dish, the result is a perfect fusion of two worlds.

The Love Affair With Kiwifruit Salsa

So, why do I particularly love this Kiwifruit Salsa? Firstly, the refreshing quality of the kiwi, combined with the hearty crunch of red bell pepper and subtle heat from the jalapeno peppers, encapsulates the essence of comfort that is a cornerstone of my heartland Nebraska roots.

The recipe also wonderfully mirrors one of my favored mantras in cooking – the farm-to-table concept – by utilizing ingredients that are ripe, fresh and loaded with natural goodness. Moreover, this salsa makes me reminisce about the communal potluck dinners we’ve had at church, where every dish tells its unique, flavorful story.

Health Benefits & Culinary Pairings

The Kiwifruit Salsa is not just a delight for your palate, it is also packed with health benefits. Kiwi is famously rich in Vitamin C, which is key for our immunity. The fiber intake from onion, bell pepper and kiwifruit help in promoting gut health. Avocado provides good fats and the jalapenos offer capsaicin, which has anti-inflammatory properties and aids in burning fat. With such a health-packed blend, this recipe serves as a wonderful dietary inclusion.

As far as pairing goes, Kiwifruit Salsa works splendidly with tortilla chips, as a condiment with grilled meats, or inside a delicious Chicken Tortilla Wrap. I’ve even used it atop a Grilled Salmon with Mango Salsa for an added burst of freshness, mirroring dishes I’ve seen in other cultures that share the same love for fresh and spicy mixes.

Given its taste, health benefits and versatility, it’s no wonder that my love for Kiwifruit Salsa continues to bloom with every bite!

  • 6 ripe kiwifruits, peeled and diced
  • 1 large red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium jalapeno peppers, seeds removed and finely chopped

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ripe avocado, diced (optional)
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

Start by preparing all your ingredients. Peel and dice the 6 ripe kiwis and set them aside. Finely chop the large red bell pepper, medium red onion, and the 2 medium jalapeno peppers. If you’re using the ripe avocado, dice it as well. Ensure to remove the seeds from jalapeno peppers to reduce its heat.

Step Two

Next, finely chop half a cup of fresh cilantro. This will add a fresh tinge to your salsa. If cilantro is not to your liking, feel free to replace it with parsley.

Step Three

In a large bowl, combine your diced kiwifruits, red bell pepper, red onion, and jalapeno peppers. Add the finely chopped cilantro to the mix.

Step Four

Squeeze the juice of 2 limes directly over your mixture. This will give your salsa a tangy flavor that complements the kiwi’s sweetness. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to balance the tanginess, followed by half a teaspoon of salt and a quarter teaspoon of black pepper to season.

Step Five

If you decided to include the ripe avocado, now is the time to add it to the mix. Ensure to combine it gently to avoid mashing.

Step Six

Stir everything together until all the ingredients are well combined. Taste your salsa and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Step Seven

Let the salsa sit for at least 2 hours in the fridge before serving to allow the flavors to meld. Serve chilled and enjoy your Kiwifruit Salsa!
