There’s something wildly refreshing about a dish that expands your flavor horizons, and the Kumquat Salsa does exactly that. A vibrant blend of citrus and spice, this accompanying masterpiece can elevate any meal it graces. The mélange of finely chopped kumquats, red onions, jalapeno peppers, and other ingredients creates a salsa that is as tantalizing as it is beautiful. And it’s delightful seeing how a quirky, diminutive fruit like the kumquat can take center stage in such a versatile recipe.
A Tribute to My Roots, with a Twist
While my cooking journey often leads me in the footsteps of my Montana rancher roots and Native American traditions, there is always space for innovation. The Kumquat Salsa is one such concoction where I veered off the beaten track and experimented with new ingredients. Yes, the tangible influence of my Montana upbringing is a little subtler here, but doesn’t that make the occasional twist all the more exciting?
The Vibrant Health Boost
Not only do kumquats infuse the salsa with their distinctive zesty flavor but they also bring along a host of health benefits. Packed with antioxidants and loaded with Vitamin C, these lesser-known citrus cousins can be a real boost for your immune system. Plus, a kick of jalapeno and freshly squeezed lime juice brings in a medley of health benefits, prompting an overall invigorating impact on your wellbeing.
What really complements the composition of this salsa, though, is the integration of fresh cilantro and avocado in the salsa. Named as the “world’s healthiest food”, avocados bring a creamy texture and a shot of good fats to this robust salsa. With an amalgamation of nutrition and flavor, this recipe nurtures not just your taste buds but also your health.
A Complementary Fusion
Although a standalone wonder itself, Kumquat Salsa works stunningly with a variety of dishes. Every barbecue could benefit from a scoop of this vibrant salsa. Think Chargrilled Chicken, Grilled Shrimp Tacos or even my classic Bison Burgers. Here’s a suggestion: add a spoonful atop some rustic bread for a quick bruschetta; I guarantee you, it’s a game changer. For all the vegetarians out there, the salsa pairs amazingly with grilled Portobello mushrooms, and would also make a splendid dip for corn chips. The possibilities are virtually endless.
So whether you’re looking to perk up a regular dish, longing for an exciting snacking option, or hunting for the showstopper at your next barbecue, Kumquat Salsa has the versatility and potency to deliver.
What You’ll Need
- 1 cup of finely chopped kumquats
- 1 finely chopped medium red onion
- 1 finely chopped jalapeno pepper
- 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 cup of chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
- 1 diced and peeled avocado
Method
Step One
Start by preparing all the ingredients. Finely chop the kumquats, medium red onion, and jalapeno pepper. In case of the avocado, dice and peel it before use. Freshly squeeze limes until you achieve 1/4 cup of juice. Also, fresh cilantro needs to be chopped until you have obtained 1/2 cup.
Step Two
Transfer the finely chopped kumquats, red onion, and jalapeno pepper to a large bowl. Add in the diced avocado as well.
Step Three
Pour the freshly squeezed lime juice over the ingredients in the bowl. Afterwards, sprinkle the mixture with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Step Four
Finally, add 1/2 cup of chopped cilantro to the mixture. Stir all the ingredients together until everything is well mixed and evenly distributed.
Step Five
Let the kumquat salsa sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. For best results, cover and refrigerate before serving. Enjoy as a side dish or a topping for your favorite main course.
