Loganberry Pie

A Nostalgic Flavor Journey

Having Cuban and Spanish roots, I find myself naturally drawn to recipes that celebrate the vibrant flavors of fruits and spices. Loganberries, which are a hybrid of blackberries and raspberries, bring a unique taste that is both complex and comforting. Their juicy richness, combined with the hint of cinnamon and nutmeg in this pie, reminds me of the bold and comforting flavors found in both Caribbean and Spanish cuisines. If you’re a fan of mixed berry desserts, you’ll find the Loganberry Pie shares a delightful kinship with classic dishes like Blackberry Cobbler or Raspberry Tart.

Health Benefits and Ingredients

While Loganberry Pie is undoubtedly a treat, it also brings some health benefits to the table. Loganberries are rich in vitamin C, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, making this dessert a relatively nourishing choice. Vitamin C is excellent for boosting your immune system, while dietary fiber aids in digestion. The cinnamon and nutmeg not only add a warm, aromatic flavor but also offer their own health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and improved blood sugar control.

If you’re like me and enjoy pairing your desserts with other dishes, Loganberry Pie complements a range of meals splendidly. Try serving it after a light summer salad or alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat. Another wonderful combination is to enjoy it with a Chilled Coconut Lime Mocktail, which balances the sweetness of the pie with a refreshing citrus kick.

Overall, Loganberry Pie is not just a recipe; it’s a celebration of flavors that bridges past and present, merging wholesome ingredients with the soul-soothing taste of summer’s best fruits. Whether you’re looking to impress guests or simply indulge your sweet tooth, this pie is sure to become a favorite in your culinary repertoire.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups fresh loganberries
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (for a double-crust pie)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon water (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
ALLERGENS: Butter, Egg

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Step Two

In a large bowl, combine the fresh loganberries, granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Mix well until the berries are evenly coated and the ingredients are fully combined.

Step Three

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one of the pie crusts and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim the edges if necessary.

Step Four

Pour the loganberry mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.

Step Five

Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the filling. Trim the edges and crimp them together to seal the pie. Cut several small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

Step Six

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 teaspoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the top crust with the egg wash. If desired, sprinkle the coarse sugar on top for added texture and sweetness.

Step Seven

Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the edges of the crust seem to be browning too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil.

Step Eight

Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature, and enjoy your delicious Loganberry Pie!
