Entranced by the allure of the exotic alongside the beloved familiar, the Lulo and Chocolate Brownies Recipe captures my culinary affections both as a tradition-rooted Nebraskan and an adventurous food lover. Born and brought up amidst the vibrant cornfields of Nebraska, the luscious combination of sweet Velvetleaf and tangy Lulo strikes a harmonious chord with my soul, much like the comforting church bells on a Sunday morning in my hometown.

A Delightful Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Steeped in the farm-to-table freshness and novelty, this innovative Brownie is a testament to the versatility of the earthy cuisine from my heartland – the robust beef stews, homely corn casseroles, and now, the refreshingly surprising twist on the timeless chocolate brownie. Imagine biting into a decadent brownie, the cocoa yielding to the fresh zing of Lulo Fruit. It’s a harmonizing duo that champions the highest order of sweet-tooth satisfaction, indulging your taste buds with the grainy texture of semi-sweet chocolate chips and the optional crunch of walnuts!

A dish as unique as this has few direct comparisons but if one had to, it draws parallels to acidulated berry coulis met with the richness of hot fudge cake, yielding another complex, sweet and tart harmony. Its uniqueness equally means it stands up to pairing with a variety of dishes, but it’s especially delectable when matched with custard-based desserts or a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Healthful Indulgence

As a bonus, the Lulo and Chocolate Brownies Recipe aren’t just a joy for your palate, but they cater to your well-being too! The Lulo, a fruit native to the Andean region, is a power pack of anti-inflammatory properties, abundant in Vitamins C and A, and can help fortify the immune system. The potent unbleached all-purpose flour and protein-rich eggs contribute to your daily nutritional needs as well, bidding goodbye to guilt associated with indulgences.

So, here’s to taking a mouthwatering journey to the heart of Nebraska with a touch of Andean wonder, one bite at a time. Keep reminding yourself, each Lulo and Chocolate brownie frowned on by your waistline is a smile to your soul!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 and 1/2 cups Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 and 1/2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter (melted)
  • 4 large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Lulo Puree (Naranjilla)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 cup Chopped Walnuts (optional)
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Dairy, Eggs, Soy, Tree Nuts

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prep a 9×13 inch baking dish by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it.

Step Two

In a bowl, combine 1 and 1/2 cups of Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, 1 teaspoon Baking Powder, and 1/2 teaspoon Salt. Set this mixture aside as you prepare the other ingredients.

Step Three

In a different, larger bowl, whisk together 1 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder and 2 and 1/2 cups Granulated Sugar. Once combined, gradually stir in 1 cup melted Unsalted Butter. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Step Four

Add in 4 large Eggs, one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully mixed in before adding the next. Stir in 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract and 1 cup Lulo Puree (Naranjilla).

Step Five

Slowly add the flour mixture into the cocoa mixture, mixing continuously. Stir until the batter is smooth and all the dry ingredients are fully mixed in.

Step Six

Fold in 1 and 1/2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips and, if you chose to include it, 1/2 cup Chopped Walnuts. Try to evenly distribute them throughout the batter.

Step Seven

Transfer the brownie batter to the prepared baking dish, making sure to spread it out evenly. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 35-40 minutes. To check if it’s done, insert a toothpick into the center of the brownies. If it comes out mostly clean, with only few crumbs attached, the brownies are done.

Step Eight

Remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool in the baking dish before cutting into squares. Enjoy your delicious Lulo and Chocolate Brownies!
