Mulberry Jam

The Homey Charm of Mulberry Jam

Contrary to where my seafaring roots lie, my children Erin and Samantha, whose childhood summers were accentuated with the sound of the waves and the salty aroma of the Atlantic, harbor a particular affection for the rich, sweet, and subtly tangy flavor of this fruit-based recipe. It echoes of afternoons spent picking sun-warmed berries, screams of laughter reverberating through the garden. This jam truly embodies the warmth of familial love and the sweet simplicity of our New England home.

Health Benefits and Versatility

Mulberries, the star ingredient in this jam, are not only delightful in taste but also packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber which boost your immnune system and aid in digestion. Plus, adding a tablespoon of lemon juice enhances the nutritional impact with a healthy dose of vitamin C. Know more about the health benefits of mulberries here.

Another element I love about this recipe is its incredible versatility. Homemade Mulberry Jam is a delightful addition to a multitude of recipes. It pairs well with freshly baked scones, adds a fruity twist to savory meat glazes, and even makes a great filling for biscuits or tarts. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might try whisking mulberry jam into a vibrant marinade for chicken or pork, adding it along with delicately spiced cream cheese to a toasted bagel or swirling it into a freshly baked quick bread.

Whether it’s for your morning toast, a festive cheese board, or simply a spoonful straight from the jar when you need a sweet pick-me-up, this mulberry jam never fails to hit the right notes.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups of fresh mulberries
  • 2-1/2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of pectin
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of butter (optional)
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

Start by washing the fresh mulberries thoroughly. After this, use the back of a spoon or fork to gently mash them. This process will help release the juice from the mulberries.

Step Two

In a large pot, combine the mashed mulberries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and pectin. Stir the mixture well to ensure that the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step Three

Place the pot over medium heat, then add the water. Stir constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step Four

Once the sugar is dissolved, increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the optional butter at this point if you choose to use it. The purpose of the butter is to reduce foaming during the boiling process.

Step Five

Allow the mixture to boil for about 10 minutes, or until it reaches the gel stage. You can test this by dropping a small amount of the jam onto a cold plate. If it sets and forms a skin on top, your jam is ready.

Step Six

Once your jam is set, remove it from the heat. Spoon the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace. Seal the jars immediately, then process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Step Seven

Finally, remove the jars from the water bath and let them cool on a wire rack. Check the seal after 24 hours. The jam is now ready to be stored in a cool, dark place or enjoyed immediately.
