As a Louisiana native with French ancestry, I’ve spent a lifetime marrying flavours and techniques from both cultures in my culinary creations. I may have perfection quite a number of original recipes but oh, how I adore the classics! In my repertoire of beloved tested and tweaked recipes, the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie shines as a crowd favourite. With an impressively simple list of ingredients, this recipe yields an end result that is both wholesomely nourishing and intoxicatingly delicious.
The Magic of Simple Ingredients
Preparing these oatmeal raisin cookies is like orchestrating a symphony of simple, wholesome ingredients. Nutritious oats, plump raisins, aromatic cinnamon; each ingredient contributes its unique flavor and texture to make these cookies nothing short of exceptional. The harmonious blend of flavors is reminiscent of an elegant French pâtisserie dessert, while the down-to-earth simplicity of the recipe harkens back to my Creole heritage.
Health Benefits in Every Bite
Snacking needn’t always be an act of indulgence. As a foodie devoted to both taste and health, I adore recipes that possess both these qualities. Oatmeal raisin cookies fall right into this balance. Containing oats, a fantastic source of fiber and antioxidants, and raisins that are high in iron and healthy minerals, these cookies are a treat you can consume without any guilt. The addition of cinnamon not only enhances the taste but also adds its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to the nutrition profile of the cookies.
A Flexible Star of Many a Menu
Such is the appeal of these oatmeal raisin cookies, as they’re similar to other classic oat and raisin-based dishes, like the traditional British flapjacks. If you’re planning a full menu, these cookies would also perfectly cap off a meal featuring a savory item such as Chicken and Sausage Jambalaya, a nod to my Creole lineage, balancing its heat with their hearty sweetness. Serve them up at a family gathering, or pack them for a picnic and watch them disappear!
What You’ll Need
- 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted
- 3/4 cup of packed light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 1/2 cups of old fashioned oats
- 1 cup of raisins
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step Two
In a medium bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir these dry ingredients together until they’re fully mixed.
Step Three
In a different bowl, pour in 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter. Add 3/4 cup of packed light brown sugar and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Stir these ingredients together until they’re completely combined.
Step Four
Add the large egg and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract into the butter and sugar mixture. Blend these ingredients together until they’re uniformly mixed.
Step Five
Gradually mix the dry flour combination into your wet butter mixture. Stir continuously while adding the flour to prevent clumping and to ensure a smooth batter.
Step Six
Add 1 1/2 cups of old fashioned oats and 1 cup of raisins into the batter. Gently stir them into the mixture until they’re evenly dispersed throughout the dough.
Step Seven
Use a cookie scoop or a spoon to dollop portions of dough onto your lined baking sheet. Make sure to space your cookies about 2 inches apart to allow them room to expand as they bake.
Step Eight
Place the baking sheet in your preheated oven and bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, or until they’re golden brown at the edges. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, and then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Step Nine
Once the cookies have cooled completely, they’re ready to be served and enjoyed!
