Why I Love Indian Paneer Flatbread Wrap

One of the reasons why I love the Paneer Flatbread Wrap recipe is because it perfectly encapsulates the idea of fusion cuisine, blending contrasting flavors from different culinary traditions to create something completely new and exciting. As someone who was raised in Seattle but has a deep connection with his Japanese heritage, I have a special appreciation for dishes that incorporate ingredients and techniques from different parts of the world. The combination of paneer – a firm Indian cheese, with spices commonly found in Indian households, coupled with the Western whole wheat flatbread results in a magnificent fusion that dances on your palate.

Paneer Flatbread Wrap

Blending Cultures through Food

Using the union of different culinary elements, like in this wrap, allows for a broadening of flavor profiles and the creation of unique dishes. Inspired by fusion cuisine experts like Sanjeev Kapoor, this recipe showcases how effectively ingredients from different culinary backgrounds can come together to form a beautiful symphony of flavors. The spicy and rich Indian flavors contrast beautifully with the healthier and grainy texture of the whole wheat flatbread, something more popular in American and Western cuisines.

A Versatile Dish

In addition to its delicious blend of flavors, another reason why I love the Paneer Flatbread Wrap recipe is its versatility. Whether you’re looking for a simple yet satisfying lunch or a unique dish to serve at a dinner party, this recipe has you covered. I find it’s similar to Mexican quesadillas and Greek gyros, with the principal of combining simple but flavorful ingredients in a handheld wrap. It can also be paired with a variety of other side dishes, such as a simple cucumber, onion and tomato salad, or a heaping portion of spicy, crispy fries. Regardless of how you decide to serve it, the Paneer Flatbread Wrap is guaranteed to win over any crowd.

The spices used in the recipe can always be adjusted to better suit your palate. The joy in cooking and experimenting with different dishes is that you can always make them your own. The Paneer Flatbread Wrap is not only a testament to fusion cuisine, but it also showcases the power of food in bringing different cultures together – on a single plate.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups cubed paneer
  • 6 whole wheat flatbreads
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green bell peppers, diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup plain yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • Salt, to taste
ALLERGENS: Paneer, whole wheat flatbreads, garlic, plain yoghurt

Method

Step One

Start by heating the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add your minced garlic and grated ginger; sauté until the raw smell has disappeared.

Step Two

Proceed to add the finely chopped onions to the pan and cook them until they are golden brown. Once the onions are ready, add the chopped tomatoes and diced bell peppers. Cook this mixture until the tomatoes are soft and the peppers are cooked yet crunchy.

Step Three

Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala powder to the pan. Stir well to combine all the ingredients. Cook this mixture for a minute, ensuring the spices are well mixed with the onion and tomato mixture.

Step Four

Now, it’s time to add the paneer cubes. Cook them until they have soaked up all the flavors and are slightly browned. Don’t overcook them as they might get dry and hard. Instead, they should be soft and juicy.

Step Five

Time to add some tanginess to the wrap. Pour in the plain yoghurt and mix well. This will also make the filling creamy. Add salt to taste and remember to stir occasionally to prevent it from burning at the bottom of the pan.

Step Six

Switch off the heat and stir in the finely chopped fresh coriander leaves.

Step Seven

Warm the whole wheat flatbreads and place a good amount of the paneer mixture in the center. Roll it up securely. Repeat this with the remaining flatbreads and filling.

Step Eight

Your Paneer Flatbread Wraps are now ready to serve. Enjoy them hot for the best taste.
