There’s a certain magic to the Pear Galette that overrides all of my senses in the best possible way. The allure of its caramelized pear slices and sugar-dusted crust captures my heart every single time I prepare this dish. It’s more than just a recipe, it’s a canvas of sweet, zesty and rich flavors that serve up comfort in every slice.

Delicious Pear Galette

A Fusion of Flavors

The Pear Galette, a classic French dish, reminds me of home back in California, where orchards burgeon with succulent pears each fall. When I moved away from my West Coast roots to start a family with my husband, Faisal, I looked for ways to incorporate my unique heritage into the meals I lovingly prepared for our two sons. This recipe, with its simple ingredients transformed into an exquisite display, embodies that fusion. A subtle hint of lemon juice, a common element in many Gujarati dishes, plays with the pear’s inherent sweetness while the rich buttery crust is reminiscent of hand-rolled rotis from my childhood.

Healthful and Scrumptious

And then there’s the way this Pear Galette marries indulgence and nutrition. Pears are a great source of essential nutrients, such as dietary fiber and vitamin C, aiding in overall health and digestion. Plus, with the moderate amount of sugar and butter used, it attests to my belief that a wholesome dessert doesn’t need to be devoid of flavor.

A well-deserved nod should also be given to its flexibility in a meal plan. It can effortlessly become a star attraction on the brunch table when paired with soft-boiled eggs and a crisp green salad. Or it can sit elegantly on the dinner table, becoming the grand finale of a savory chicken tikka masala meal.

So here’s to the Pear Galette – a testament to the power of simplicity, a harmonious blend of my past and present, and a delicious journey that invites everyone to the table.

What You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 medium pears, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 round of refrigerated pie dough (about 9 inches in diameter)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
ALLERGENS: granulated sugar, unsalted butter, egg, pie dough

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step Two

Place the pears in a bowl, add the lemon juice and toss until the slices are fully coated.

Step Three

In a separate bowl, combine the granulated sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix it well and then add it to the pears.

Step Four

Unroll the refrigerated pie dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Arrange the pear slices in the center, leaving about 2 inches of dough around the edges.

Step Five

Fold the edges of the dough over the pears, pinching the edge to seal. Brush the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle the coarse sugar over the pears and the crust.

Step Six

Dot the pears with small bits of the unsalted butter. This will melt into the pears as they bake, adding part of their flavor to the galette.

Step Seven

Bake the galette for about 35-40 minutes or until the crust is golden and the pears are tender. Allow the pear galette to cool on the baking sheet before serving.
