Beauty of Simplicity

The Raisin Scone is almost deceptive in its elegance—less is genuinely more here. The reality is this: it’s not about throwing a pantry full of ingredients together, but the harmonious blending of a few well-chosen ones, each accord contributing to the beautiful flavor medley. Inspired from traditional Irish scones, its beauty lies in its simplicity and versatility.

Benefits wrapped in Flavor

These Raisin Scones aren’t just about appeasing the palate and offering a tasty treat. They also come packed with a generous health punch. The raisins included in it provide a natural sweetness along with a smorgasbord of health benefits. They’re packed with fiber, essential for good digestion, and a raft of handy minerals such as iron, potassium, and calcium.

Alongside that, let’s not forget the boost of protein and healthy fats from the egg and unsalted butter, making it a balanced, nutritious delight. It’s this perfect blend of taste and health that leaves me reaching out for my grandmother’s carefully preserved recipe every time I’m in the mood for a delicious snack.

Match made in Gourmet Heaven

These sweet, slightly crumbly scones are versatile. Have them with your morning cup of joe, then again in the afternoon with a spot of tea. Or serve them alongside smoked salmon and cream cheese for a truly gourmet brunch. They’re similar to an American biscuit, but with a unique tenderness and a sweet, fruity twist. Undeniably, these Raisin Scones are an all-day treat flexible enough to pair with an array of dishes.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, frozen
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 large egg
ALLERGENS: Gluten, Milk, Egg

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius and ensure the rack is in the middle of the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Step Two

In a medium-sized bowl, mix together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Step Three

Grate 8 tablespoons of frozen unsalted butter into the flour mixture using the large holes of a box grater. Use your fingers to work in the butter until the mixture resembles a coarse meal, then stir in 1/2 cup of raisins.

Step Four

In a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of sour cream and 1 large egg until smooth.

Step Five

Stir sour cream mixture into the flour mixture until large dough clumps form. Use your hands to press the dough against the bowl into a ball.

Step Six

Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick. Use a sharp knife to cut into 8 triangles and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Step Seven

Bake until golden brown, about 15 to 17 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.
