I find absolute joy in crafting recipes that echo my Californian upbringing and Gujarati heritage, and the Sapote Cream Pie is no exception. The sweet and delicate taste of Sapote fruit is the hero of this delectable dessert standing tall with its splendid creaminess that harmoniously embodies my identity. Courtesy of this delightful fruit, the dessert caters not only to the sweet teeth out there but also promises a multitude of health benefits.
A Fusion of Flavors
It’s not just the sapote fruit that lends its magic to this recipe – the buttery graham cracker base giving way to the silky sapote filling, and the sweet and fluffy whipped cream topping creates a taste-texture symphony in every bite. The ingredients work in perfect harmony, manifesting as a dessert that truly holds the essence of my Californian-Gujarati kitchen.
What I find most intriguing about the Sapote Cream Pie lies in its familiarity and novelty both. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the American classic key lime pie and yet, brings a unique twist with the use of sapote, a fruit cherished in my Gujarati lineage. Pair this delectable pie with a cup of spiced chai for a perfect high-tea or with a Mango Lassi for an indulgent summer treat.
From the Heart, For Health
The allure of the Sapote Cream Pie stretches beyond its culinary attributes, reaching into the domain of health. The lusciously sweet sapote fruit stands as a powerhouse of essential nutrients. Loaded with vitamin C, it helps in bolstering the immunity system. It is a great source of dietary fiber, promoting better digestion, and is packed with antioxidants that contribute to overall health and wellness.
This combined with the goodness of dairy in the recipe – milk and butter, makes the Sapote Cream Pie a dessert that soothes the soul without compromising on health. Hence, it’s not just about satisfying your sweet cravings, but it’s also a
consciously nutritious choice that you can make for yourself and your loved ones.
In the quiet tranquility of my kitchen, when the sweet scent of the sapote filling wafts through the air, matching its rhythm with the soft hum of my oven, and the final product reveals itself in all its lush, creamy splendor – that’s when I find my absolute joy. And I am certain, this same joy will reach your kitchen, your home, transforming a simple culinary experiment into an intimate celebration of flavors, health, and culture.
What You’ll Need
- 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter
- 3 cups pureed sapote fruit
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Combine the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter in a bowl. Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the crust is set. Allow it to cool.
Step Two
While the crust is cooling, prepare the sapote filling. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix together the pureed sapote, sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Step Three
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg yolks. Gradually pour this into the sapote mixture, stirring constantly. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Let it boil for 1 minute before removing it from heat.
Step Four
Add the 2 tablespoons of butter and vanilla extract to the boiling sapote mixture. Stir until the butter is completely melted. Pour the sapote mixture into the cooled pie crust.
Step Five
Let the pie cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then refrigerate it for at least 3 hours, or until the filling is set.
Step Six
Before serving, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar together until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the chilled pie. Your Sapote Cream Pie is now ready to be served and enjoyed!
