Why I Love Finnish Soy Meatballs with Tomato Sauce
Every once in a while, I embark on a culinary journey to explore new flavors and culinary techniques, while connecting with my roots. One such exploration led me to discover the Finnish delight – Soy Meatballs with Tomato Sauce. This has now become a favourite recipe amongst family and friends who relish the perfect blend of nutritious soy mince and tangy tomato sauce.
The Inspiration Behind These Delicious Meatballs
While I do have a strong affinity for New England seafood and homely Irish dishes – thanks to my Boston upbringing and Irish lineage – my palate craves diversity. On one of my virtual culinary trips, Juhani Pallasmaa, a Finnish chef renowned for his innovative dishes, caught my attention. His love for rich and diverse flavors inspired me to create this Soy Meatballs with Tomato Sauce recipe.
Why Soy Meatballs hold a special place in my heart
There are several reasons why Soy Meatballs with Tomato Sauce has become a beloved choice in our household. The contrast between the texture of the soy meatballs and the smooth, rich tomato sauce creates a harmony of flavors that is undeniably fascinating. These meatballs aren’t just about the taste though, they offer a high dose of protein courtesy of the soy mince, making them a nutritious choice too.
Beyond the flavour and nutrition, it’s the shared experience that this dish brings. With ingredients like breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, minced garlic, herbs and more, there’s always a role for Laura and our little champ to help me in the kitchen. Nothing can beat the joy of seeing your family enjoy a dish that you’ve poured your heart into creating.
This recipe has undoubtedly become a regular feature on our dining table. From weeknight dinners to get-togethers, these protein-packed Soy Meatballs drenched in aromatic Tomato Sauce have earned their place as a crowd favorite.
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of soy mince
- 3/4 cup of breadcrumbs
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cans (each 14.5 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
Method
Step One
Combine the soy mince, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs, milk, dried oregano, dried basil, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
Step Two
Form the mixture into small, round balls. Arrange them in a single layer on a plate and set aside.
Step Three
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the meatballs and brown them on all sides. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
Step Four
Remove the meatballs from the pan and set them aside. In the same pan, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, and red chili flakes (if using). Stir well to combine everything.
Step Five
Bring the tomato mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
Step Six
Return the meatballs to the pan and stir them into the tomato sauce. Let everything simmer for another 10-15 minutes, or until the meatballs are heated through and the flavors have melded together.
Step Seven
Check the seasoning and adjust if necessary. Your Soy Meatballs with Tomato Sauce are now ready to enjoy. Serve hot for the best flavor.
