Why I Love Indian Spicy Fish Broth Masala

Welcome to the vibrant flavors of my Spicy Fish Broth Masala—an Indian recipe that superbly marries health-consciousness with comfort. Steeped in a harmonized blend of spices, the warmth of this dish evokes memories of my Californian upbringing while introducing a zest that is unmistakably Indian. Born and raised in the Californian valleys, my culinary journey has been a blend of the familiar and exotic, which is why I fell in love with this recipe.

Spicy Fish Broth Masala

A strong nod to Indian Culinary Heritage and health

This dish’s robust flavors owe their roots to traditional Indian cooking, with herbs and spices that are not just flavorful but also offer substantial health benefits. Inspired by the traditional Indian Fish Curry, this dish is a more wholesome rendition, boasting of comforting, soup-like consistency. The inclusion of white fish fillets, high in protein and low in fat, make it a wonderful addition to a health-conscious diet. What further fascinated me is that the masala powder, turmeric and the fresh green chili render this dish its heat, a facet dear to the cuisine of the region, without compromising on its nutritional values.

Spicy Fish Broth Masala – A versatile dish

This Spicy Fish Broth Masala is marvelously versatile. It’s a perfect standalone dish—wholesome, satisfying, and delicious. Savor it with a slice of rustic, whole-grain bread or pair it with rice if you prefer. Warm up a chilly evening with a bowl of this robust fish broth or serve it chilled on a hot summer day as a refreshing, vibrant soup. It’s also delectably companionable with other Indian bread-based dishes like Roti or Naan.

Detouring a bit from my comfort-zone cooking, I dare say, this recipe happened upon me through the prolific Dr. Tom. An Alaskan who adores curry, he prefers an addition of mustard seeds for an extra kick. I loved the idea and I included it in my recipe.

The joy of cooking, for me, lies in this beautiful journey between the known and the new, marrying exotic tastes with homegrown flavors. I’d love to know how your foray into the Spicy Fish Broth Masala turned out. Remember, experimentation is warmly welcomed in all my recipes – so don’t hesitate to give it your very own twist!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 lbs of white fish fillets
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of onions, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 large green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1/2 cup of tomato puree
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 2 teaspoons of salt, or to taste
  • 1 bunch of fresh coriander, chopped, for garnishing
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges, for serving
ALLERGENS: Fish, Garlic, Mustard

Method

Step One

Start by heating the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them sizzle for about 1 minute.

Step Two

Add the finely chopped onions to the pot and saute them until they turn a golden brown color.

Step Three

Next, add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and finely chopped green chili to the pot. Stir well and let these ingredients cook for about 2 minutes.

Step Four

Once the garlic, ginger, and chili are well combined, add the masala powder, turmeric powder, and tomato puree to the pot. Stir well to combine.

Step Five

After the spices are well mixed, add the white fish fillets to the pot. Gently mix everything together, making sure the fish is well coated with the spice mixture.

Step Six

Now, add the water, coconut milk, and salt to the pot. Stir well, then bring the broth to a boil.

Step Seven

Once the broth begins to boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the fish fillets are fully cooked.

Step Eight

Finally, sprinkle the chopped fresh coriander over the broth. Serve the Spicy Fish Broth Masala hot, with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing. Enjoy!
