Spicy Tangerine Chicken holds a special place in my heart, and it’s a recipe I often turn to when I want to impress my friends and family. Growing up in Portland, Maine, my culinary journey was deeply influenced by the ocean’s bounty, but every once in a while, I crave the sweet and spicy aromas that aren’t salt-kissed by the Atlantic breeze. This recipe provides just that, making me feel like I’m experiencing summer on a sunny veranda, regardless of the season.
A Harmony of Flavors
What stands out about Spicy Tangerine Chicken is the harmony between the sweetness of tangerines and the kick of Sriracha and red pepper flakes. The fresh tangerine juice and zest provide a lively citrus note, enhancing the tenderness of the chicken while also giving it a fragrant aroma. As a mom, I appreciate how this dish appeals to my daughters, Erin and Samantha. The honey balances the spice making it family-friendly while still satisfying my desire for something with a bit of a punch.
Health Benefits
On top of its delightful taste, this dish comes with numerous health benefits. Tangerines are rich in vitamin C, which boosts the immune system. The fresh ginger and garlic not only add aromatic flavors but also bring anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to the table. Swapping out white rice with brown rice can increase the fiber content, making it a more balanced meal. The use of vegetable oil and the minimal frying also keeps the dish relatively light, especially when compared to other fried chicken recipes.
If you love dishes like Orange Chicken or General Tso’s Chicken, you will find this recipe a refreshing yet familiar alternative. The tangerine adds a unique twist, making it a wonderful dish to serve during those special gatherings or simply as a midweek treat.
Pair this delightful dish with a side of Asian Stir-Fry or a light cucumber salad to complete your meal. You’ll find that this Spicy Tangerine Chicken pairs well with a multitude of sides, making it a versatile addition to your cooking repertoire.
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup fresh tangerine juice (about 4-5 tangerines)
- 2 tbsp tangerine zest (from about 2 tangerines)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp Sriracha sauce
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
- Steamed white or brown rice for serving
ALLERGENS: Soy sauce (soy), Sriracha sauce (may contain soy and/or gluten depending on the brand), Cornstarch (may contain gluten depending on the manufacturing process).
Method
Step One
In a medium bowl, whisk together the tangerine juice, tangerine zest, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, Sriracha sauce, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
Step Two
In a separate large bowl, toss the chicken pieces with the cornstarch until evenly coated.
Step Three
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook until they are browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
Step Four
In the same skillet, pour in the tangerine sauce mixture and cook over medium heat until it starts to simmer.
Step Five
In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering sauce, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
Step Six
Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to ensure the chicken is heated through.
Step Seven
Serve the Spicy Tangerine Chicken over steamed white or brown rice. Garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro, if desired.
