As much as my heart is rooted deep in New England’s seafood culture, my sweet tooth drags me towards concocting innovative desserts. One that I hold close to my heart is the exotic ‘Star Apple Crumble.

Star Apple Crumble

The Star Apple Crumble brings back sentimental memories not only from my childhood but also as a mother. There’s something incredibly heartwarming about teaching my daughters, Erin and Samantha, the comfort and joy in baking. And this particular dessert, a fusion of New England’s classic apple crumble with the tropical charm of star fruit, symbolizes that quintessential togetherness.

A Twist in the Classic Crumble

This recipe puts an interesting spin on the traditional apple crumble, a dessert known for its sweetly-spiced bubbling apples topped with a buttery oat crumble – you can’t go wrong. The addition of Star Apples truly brings a refreshing twist to this beloved dessert. If you’ve never experienced a star apple before, you’re in for a treat. Native to the tropics, this fruit is sweet and creamy, with an exotic flavor that adds an entirely new dimension to this culinary classic.

The Delectable Union of Health and Taste

This Star Apple Crumble doesn’t just excel in the taste department; it also taps into the health benefits of its key ingredients. Star Apples, aside from their enchanting flavor, are known for their rich antioxidant contents, which promote heart health and skin vitality. The rolled oats used in the crumble have a whole lot of fiber and can aid in digestion and regulate blood sugar levels. Oh, and there’s also the hint of cinnamon – another powerful antioxidant that, as research would have it, can lower your risk for heart disease.

The Star Apple Crumble fits perfectly at the end of a grand seafood dinner or a laid-back barbecue. Pair it with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, and you’re signing off for a beautiful food-induced sleep! And while it is perfect as a stand-alone dessert, you could also serve it alongside whipped cream or some fresh, homemade berry compote for that extra burst of flavor.

In essence, when you take the first bite of this Star Apple Crumble, you’re experiencing not just a dessert, but decades of culinary experiences, a homage to family traditions and an epicurean’s enchantment in fusing the classic with the exotic. I can’t wait for you to try it!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups diced Star Apples
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats
  • 1 stick Unsalted Butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • Vanilla Ice Cream (optional for serving)
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Gluten, Milk

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is warming up, combine the diced star apples and lemon juice in a large mixing bowl. Toss them together until the apples are well coated with the juice.

Step Two

In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Ensure all the ingredients are well-combined.

Step Three

Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to break up the butter and mix it in with the dry ingredients. Continue to do this until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step Four

Transfer the star apples to a baking dish and evenly spread the crumble mixture on top. Make sure the apples are completely covered.

Step Five

Place the dish in your preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and the star apple filling is bubbly.

Step Six

Remove the star apple crumble from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. If desired, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
