A recipe close to my heart, the Star Apple Jam, encompasses my love for cooking. Originating from my native Louisiana, this jam delivers just the right blend of sweet, citrusy tang and buttery richness – much like the uniqueness of the Creole desserts I grew up with. Not to mention, the elegance and refinement within its simplicity echoes the sophistication of French patisseries.
A Soothing Taste from Nature’s Hearth
What I love most about this Star Apple Jam is its soothing, down-to-earth taste. It resonates with all the grandeur of the exotic star apples. This tropical fruit is not just delightful to the taste, its health benefits are numerous. Star apples are packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants that boost immunity while its dietary fiber content helps digestion.
The added touch of lemon juice not only enhances its taste but also brings in its own set of health benefits. Whether you’re spreading it on your morning toast or using it as a filling for your favorite pastry, this Star Apple Jam will always bring a jolt of freshness to your palate!
A Fond Nod to My Ancestry
Every spoon of this Star Apple Jam reminds me of my dual culinary heritage – the full-bodied richness of Creole confections amplified by the elegance of French delicates. This jam pairs well with all kinds of breads, especially French croissants and beignets, further solidifying my bond with this culinary marvel. For those unacquainted with the delicate sweetness of beignets or the crusty glory of croissants, Star Apple Jam is definitely a pleasurable entry point.
Moreover, having a jar full of homemade Star Apple Jam in your pantry is a nod towards culinary self-sufficiency – a virtue passed down through generations in my Louisiana family. Every jar is petite testament to the craft of desert making, embodying the warmth, love, and thoroughness needed to coax the most flavor from modest ingredients. That, to me, is the essence of true gourmet cooking.
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of star apple flesh
- 1.5 cups of granulated sugar
- 1.4 cup of water
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon of pectin
- 1/2 teaspoon of unsalted butter
Method
Step One
Begin by washing your star apples thoroughly. Cut them into halves and gently scoop out the flesh, ensuring you discard any seeds. Measure out 2 cups of the flesh and set aside.
Step Two
In a medium-sized, non-reactive saucepan, combine the star apple flesh, granulated sugar, and water. Turn the heat on to medium and keep stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Step Three
Add the lemon juice to the mixture in the saucepan. Continue to stir and cook for about 10 minutes or until the star apple flesh becomes soft and pulpy.
Step Four
Once the star apple becomes soft, sprinkle the pectin over the mixture. Stir thoroughly to make sure the pectin is fully dissolved. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly to prevent it from scorching.
Step Five
Once the mixture starts boiling, add the unsalted butter. Continue to boil for another minute or so, making sure to keep stirring. The butter will help reduce any foam that forms on the top of the mixture.
Step Six
After boiling for a minute with the butter, reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes or until it reaches your desired consistency.
Step Seven
Remove the pan from the heat and let the jam cool completely. Once it’s cool, you can use it immediately or transfer it to a sterilized jar for storage. Your star apple jam is now ready to enjoy!
