As a Boston native with an Irish culinary lineage, I find unique joy in merging the seemingly disparate worlds of New England seafood and Irish comfort food in my kitchen. Yet, there’s a new recipe that has been capturing my heart lately – the Stir-fried Grewia Asiatica with Vegetables. It’s a colourful medley of eaten fruits and fresh vegetables that delivers both a taste sensation and a nutritional punch.

Stir-fried Grewia Asiatica with Vegetables

Marrying Taste and Nutrition

Now, what makes Stir-fried Grewia Asiatica with Vegetables so special? One could say it’s in the unique combination of the Grewia Asiatica fruit (also known as Phalsa or Falsa), a gem native to Southern Asia, with a vibrant array of mixed vegetables. The dish balances the tartness of the fruit with the natural sweetness of veggies, all wrapped up in the savoury partnership of garlic and ginger before a gentle kick from a dash of red pepper flakes. Not only does this dish capture my imagination, but it’s also a nutritional powerhouse. It’s high in fibre and vitamins from the fruit and vegetables, has anti-inflammatory properties from the garlic and ginger, and stands as a good source of lean protein.

A Dish that Echoes My Love for Global Flavors

My fiancée, Laura, and I tend to experiment a lot in our kitchen. We love trying out different cuisines, and this Asian-inspired recipe with a twist has become one of our favourites. It beautifully pairs with dishes from various cuisines. For instance, you might want to enjoy it alongside a steaming bowl of Thai green curry or perhaps a succulent helping of pan-fried salmon with new potatoes.

Our little one, too, seems to enjoy the texture of this fruit-vegetable stir-fry. I believe it’s the simplicity of the ingredients that builds an inviting and familiar taste profile, reminding us that the best of flavours often dwell in the most basic of recipes. It’s a testament to how versatile and cross-cultural food can be, just like my own culinary journey.

So, if you’re looking for a new recipe to shake up your usual dinner routine, why not give Stir-fried Grewia Asiatica with Vegetables a try? Trust me, this delightful symphony of bold tastes, vibrant colours, and health benefits will bring a touch of culinary exploration to your dining table.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups Grewia Asiatica fruit
  • 3 cups of mixed vegetables (carrots, bell peppers, zucchini)
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 servings of cooked jasmine rice
ALLERGENS: Soy, sesame

Method

Step One

Start by preparing your ingredients. Wash and chop the mixed vegetables into bite-sized pieces. Peel and mince the garlic and ginger. Wash and strain the Grewia Asiatica fruit.

Step Two

Heat a large wok or frying pan over medium heat. Once heated, add the vegetable oil, followed by the minced garlic and chopped ginger. Sauté until they become fragrant but be careful not to burn them.

Step Three

Add in the Grewia Asiatica fruit and stir-fry for a couple of minutes until they soften.

Step Four

Add the mixed vegetables to the pan. Stir-fry for around five minutes until they start to soften but maintain a bit of crunch. Sprinkle some salt over the vegetables during this process.

Step Five

Combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and honey in a small bowl. Stir until everything is well combined.

Step Six

Pour the sauce into the pan with the vegetables and Grewia Asiatica. Stir-fry everything together for another two minutes for the flavors to meld together.

Step Seven

Adjust taste if necessary with extra salt or pepper flakes. Serve hot with a side of cooked jasmine rice.
