Energizing and refreshing, our Tangelo and Greek Yogurt Parfait is a blend of brilliant flavors and all-natural ingredients. It’s a dish that reminds me of my bittersweet Gujarati roots and the abundance of fresh produce California offers. In this recipe, the bright, citric essence of tangelos meets the creamy richness of Greek yogurt, all rounded off with a pleasant crunch from the granola and the sweetness of honey. It’s a parfait that underscores the essence of fusion cuisine, marrying ingredients that I’ve come to love from both my homes.
The Perfect Blend of Flavor and Health
Besides being incredibly tasty, this Tangelo and Greek Yogurt Parfait comes packed with a host of nutritional benefits. The Greek yogurt is a great source of probiotics for gut health and packed with protein, while the tangelos, a hybrid of tangerine and pomelo, are rich in vitamin C which boosts immunity. Additionally, the granola brings in much-needed fiber and the honey offers a healthier alternative to sugar. It’s the kind of dessert that you can enjoy without guilt, knowing that each spoonful brings goodness not just for your taste buds but for your health too.
Founding Flavors and Complementary Dishes
I’m reminded of traditional Indian desserts like Shrikhand when I prepare this Tangelo and Greek Yogurt Parfait. Though a far cry from the usual Indian flavors, this dish adds its unique touch to a meal. It works wonderfully well when followed by spicy mains, like a flavorful Chicken Tikka Masala or a robust Lentil-Turmeric Curry. The cooling yogurt and tangelo combination is a much-welcomed balance after a fiery meal. Its freshness cuts through the aromatics of the mains, cleansing the palate and leaving you with a refreshing aftertaste.
There’s a delight in savoring the Tangelo and Greek Yogurt Parfait at the end of a hearty meal. Whether you’re Indian, American, or from any other part of the world, it’s a recipe that has a sense of familiarity with its simple yet meaningful ingredients, arousing nostalgia and introducing new sensations all in one go. This is why I love this recipe–it’s a blend of past and present, traditional and innovative, homely and exotic. It’s a dish that represents me, my journey and my love for food in every delicious spoonful.
What You’ll Need
- 6 medium tangelos
- 3 cups Greek yogurt
- 1 1/2 cups granola
- 1/2 cup honey
- Mint leaves for garnishing (optional)
Method
Step One
Begin by peeling the tangelos and separating them into segments. Remove any seeds or pith as well.
Step Two
In four individual serving dishes or glasses, begin layering the ingredients. Start with a layer of Greek yogurt at the bottom of each glass.
Step Three
Add a layer of tangelo segments on top of the Greek yogurt, distributing the segments evenly between all four glasses.
Step Four
Next comes a layer of granola. Scatter it on top of the tangelo layers. It’s okay if some of it sinks down into the yogurt – this will add extra texture to the parfait.
Step Five
Drizzle honey over the granola. The honey will add a touch of natural sweetness to the parfait and help bind the granola together a bit.
Step Six
Repeat the process, adding another layer of Greek yogurt, followed by tangelos, granola, and honey in each glass, until all of the ingredients are used.
Step Seven
Garnish with fresh mint leaves if desired. The mint will add a fresh, herbal touch to the parfaits.
Step Eight
Enjoy the parfaits immediately, or cover and refrigerate them for up to four hours before serving. The flavors will meld together wonderfully if you let the parfaits sit for a while before eating.
