Just think of it, the splash of cool Tangerine Sorbet taking over your palate – tastes like summer, doesn’t it? This recipe, sweet and tart with an intense citrus kick, is more than a dessert for me; it’s a fusion of flavors that transport me back to my childhood, reminding me of afternoons spent at my Nigerian parents’ home in the heart of Atlanta.

A Touch of Personal History

Atlanta is famous for its peaches, but in my family home, it was the tangerine tree in our backyard that ruled. We really loved that sour-sweet citrus, using it to add a zing to everything, from savory roasts to sweet sorbets. Maybe that’s why this Tangerine Sorbet recipe holds such a special place in my heart. It’s not just the tangy deliciousness of the recipe that does it; there’s a hint of nostalgia that accompanies each spoonful, a reminder of the Afro-Southern fusion that paints my culinary canvas.

Not Just Delicious, but Healthy Too

Yet, this Tangerine Sorbet isn’t just about great flavors. Among the myriad of fruit-based desserts, it stands out for its health benefits too. Tangerines are packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants, proven to boost immune health and promote healthy skin. Isn’t it wonderful how a trip down memory lane could do wonders for your wellness?

This delightful Mango Sorbet and my Tangerine Sorbet could easily be long-lost cousins — both are refreshing, light, and perfect for a warm afternoon. Tangerine Sorbet also pairs well with a rich, savory dish. Try serving it after a hearty Beef Wellington — the contrast is unforgettable.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 1/2 cups of tangerine juice
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of tangerine zest
  • Pinch of salt
ALLERGENS:

Method

Step One

First, prepare a simple syrup by combining the sugar and the water in a saucepan. Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Step Two

Once your simple syrup is ready, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. During this time, you can begin juicing your tangerines until you have 1 and 1/2 cups of tangerine juice.

Step Three

In a separate bowl, combine the tangerine juice, fresh lemon juice, tangerine zest, and a pinch of salt. Stir these ingredients until they are fully mixed.

Step Four

Slowly pour the simple syrup into the bowl with the tangerine mixture. Stir continually while adding the syrup to ensure that it is thoroughly combined. Once the syrup is fully incorporated, allow the mixture to cool for about an hour, or until it reaches room temperature.

Step Five

After the mixture has cooled, pour it into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you do not have an ice cream maker, you can also pour the mixture into a shallow dish and place it in the freezer, stirring every 30 minutes until it reaches the desired consistency.

Step Six

Once the sorbet is done, serve immediately or store it in an airtight container in the freezer. Enjoy your fresh, homemade Tangerine Sorbet!
