There’s something undeniably comforting about a bowl of homemade Tomato Basil Soup. Perhaps it’s the way the flavors meld together effortlessly or the fact that it’s reminiscent of simpler times spent in the kitchen with family. This recipe holds a special place in my heart because it combines the fresh, vibrant tastes of summer produce with the heartwarming essence of a classic soup that can be enjoyed year-round.

Tomato Basil Soup

A Touch of Southern Comfort

Growing up in Texas, my culinary adventures often revolved around bold flavors and homey dinners. While my background is heavily influenced by Tex-Mex cuisine, I appreciate introducing Southern comfort in new ways. This Tomato Basil Soup does just that by bridging simple ingredients with a warm, inviting essence. It’s a modern twist on the traditional, much like the twists I bring to my Southern dishes, making it the perfect meal to come home to after a long day.

Nutritional Benefits

Not only is this Tomato Basil Soup delicious, it’s also packed with health benefits. Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants like lycopene, which is known for its cancer-fighting properties. Paired with fresh basil, which boasts anti-inflammatory benefits, this soup serves as a feel-good meal that doesn’t compromise on flavor. The optional addition of heavy cream can make it richer, but if you’re looking to keep it light, the soup is just as satisfying without it.

Speaking of personal touches, I often throw in a pinch of red pepper flakes for an added kick, reminiscent of the spicy notes found in many Tex-Mex dishes. This subtle heat can elevate the Tomato Basil Soup, adding a unique layer of complexity to each spoonful.

Perfect Pairings

This soup is versatile and pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes. You may enjoy it alongside a fresh green salad, a slice of crusty bread, or even a classic grilled cheese sandwich for a nostalgic meal that’s both filling and comforting. If you’re looking for other vegetable-based soups to try, you might enjoy a hearty Carrot Ginger Soup or a creamy Broccoli Cheese Soup.

Ultimately, what makes this Tomato Basil Soup special is its simplicity and the way it brings people together. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or someone exploring new recipes in the kitchen, this dish is a wonderful addition to your culinary repertoire. Give it a try, and you might find that it quickly becomes a favorite in your household, just as it has in mine.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 lbs ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
ALLERGENS: Chicken (if using chicken broth), Dairy (if using heavy cream)

Method

Step One

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step Two

Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Step Three

Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and cook for about 10 minutes, until the tomatoes start to break down.

Step Four

Pour in the vegetable or chicken broth, and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

Step Five

Add the fresh basil leaves, sugar, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Simmer for another 5 minutes.

Step Six

Use an immersion blender to puree the soup until smooth. Alternatively, let the soup cool slightly and blend in batches in a regular blender, then return to the pot.

Step Seven

If desired, stir in the heavy cream and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step Eight

Serve the tomato basil soup hot, garnished with additional fresh basil leaves if desired. Enjoy!
