Delicious vegan pizza topped with colourful vegetables and vegan cheese

A Slice of Brazil, A Slice of Childhood

Growing up, pizza nights were a big deal in my house. And though my Irish grandparents taught me to relish the comforts of traditional Irish stews and breads, my adventurous nature led me to discover the pleasures of global cuisines, including this quintessential Brazilian pizza. My love of this recipe connects me to those cherished childhood memories while allowing me to explore wonderful new flavours.

Though vegan pizzas can never replace my grandmother’s hearty meat pies, the power of this recipe lies in its ability to create a connection despite being so different. It might not be an age-old family recipe, but it’s something that I can share with my son one day. If you’re curious, this recipe was inspired by Chef Alex Atala, an icon of Brazilian cuisine who constantly promotes the use of local ingredients.

A Symphony of Flavors, A Testament to Creativity

Creating a great pizza is an art, and the Brazilian Vegan Pizza is no exception. A velvety tomato sauce forms the base on which it’s topped generously with vegan mozzarella cheese. The pizza is studded with a gorgeous array of colourful bell peppers, earthy mushrooms, tangy olives, juicy tomatoes, crunchy onions, and fresh spinach, each component adding its unique touch to this masterpiece.

Accompanying the veggies are sprinklings of dried oregano and garlic powder. I always say there’s no such thing as too much garlic, and this dish is a testament to that. The enchanting mixture of all these elements together gives a fresh spin to pizza as we know it, making it healthier and more exciting.

Enjoy this pizza with a cool, crisp Brazilian cocktail such as the iconic Caipirinha, or a vibrant side salad. For those who live for their desserts, follow this flavorful feast with a dark, silky vegan chocolate mousse and you’re in for a treat.

I hope you enjoy making and savoring this Brazilian Vegan Pizza as much as I do. Cooking is all about trying new things and embracing the journey, and with this recipe, you’re in for one hell of a ride. So preheat those ovens, and let’s get cooking!

  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Yeast

Method

Step One

In a large bowl combine 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 ounce of dried yeast, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix these ingredients together until they are well combined.

Step Two

Add into the mix 1 cup of warm water and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir until you have a soft dough. Once the dough has formed, knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes.

Step Three

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it and allow it to rise until it’s doubled in size. This should take about 1 hour.

Step Four

Preheat your oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is preheating, punch down the dough and transfer it to a greased or cornmeal dusted pizza stone or baking sheet. Press the dough into your desired pizza shape.

Step Five

Spread 1/2 cup of tomato sauce over the dough. Then, sprinkle 1 cup of Vegan mozzarella cheese over the tomato sauce.

Step Six

Top the pizza with 1/2 cup of sliced bell peppers, 1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms, 1/2 cup of sliced black olives, 1/2 cup of sliced tomatoes, 1/4 cup of sliced onions, and 1/4 cup of spinach leaves.

Step Seven

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of dried oregano and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder over the toppings.

Step Eight

Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

Step Nine

Remove the pizza from the oven then allow it to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade vegan pizza!
