Having grown up in Charleston, South Carolina, my palate is naturally inclined towards Southern cuisine, filled with soulful comfort food and fresh coastal seafood. However, I’ve always enjoyed embracing a variety of food cultures, and exploring the myriad flavors that the culinary world has to offer. One such exploration led me to discover and fall in love with a delightful vegetable-based dish—the Wild Leek and Swiss Chard Tart.
A Fusion of Flavors
This tart is a delicious fusion of flavors. The wild leeks, with their mild, sweet onion-esque character, merge beautifully with the earthy, nutrient-rich Swiss chard. Topping it all, the Gruyère cheese brings in a wave of creamy, nutty goodness that ties everything together. It’s an ensemble filled with taste and health—the wild leeks are an excellent source of vitamin A, while the Swiss chard is packed with a plethora of essential nutrients like vitamin K, vitamin C, and magnesium. Plus, the olive oil adds a healthy dose of heart-friendly mono-unsaturated fats.
Culinary Connections
Although this tart is a dish on its own, it reminds me of classic Southern comfort food, like a good ol’ spinach and artichoke dip or a vegetable pot pie, hinting towards these hearty, fulfilling flavors yet with a unique twist on its own. This delightful tart would complement well with many Southern classics, like a simple grilled chicken or a seafood étouffée, adding a balance with their robust flavors. Or serve it along with a fresh green salad, and you have a perfect light and refreshing summer meal!
I hope this savory veggie tart fills your kitchen with such an enchanting aroma that even the pickiest of eaters are drawn to the table. The Wild Leek and Swiss Chard Tart, with its fusion of flavors and healthful elements, is more than just food—it’s the embodiment of my culinary philosophy, a celebration of diverse flavors, and a pursuit of a deliciously balanced life. Enjoy creating and, more importantly, savoring this wonderful dish. Bon appétit!

What You’ll Need
- 2 cups wild leeks, sliced
- 1 bunch Swiss chard, chopped
- 1 frozen puff pastry sheet
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Thaw the frozen puff pastry sheet as per the package instructions.
Step Two
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the wild leeks and saute until they become tender. This should take about 5 minutes.
Step Three
Add the chopped Swiss chard to the skillet with the leeks. Cook until the chard wilts and all the liquid has evaporated. This should take another 5 minutes.
Step Four
Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface, then transfer it to a tart pan or a baking sheet. Prick the bottom with a fork to prevent puffing.
Step Five
In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, salt, and black pepper. Stir in the cooked leek and chard mixture and the Gruyère cheese.
Step Six
Pour the mixture into the prepared puff pastry. Spread evenly.
Step Seven
Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the filling is set. Allow the tart to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your Wild Leek and Swiss Chard Tart warm or at room temperature.
