Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan

The Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan has swiftly become one of my favorite recipes, and it’s not hard to see why. Growing up in Nebraska, our family dinners were a celebration of fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Kohlrabi, with its crisp texture and slightly peppery taste, embodies that spirit beautifully. This unique vegetable adds a fresh twist to our Midwestern table, offering a light yet flavorful dish that perfectly complements meat and heavier stews.

The Taste of Home

One of the joys of this recipe is how each bite carries the flavors of rustic simplicity and the satisfaction of wholesome, healthy eating. Kohlrabi offers a mild, slightly sweet flavor, reminiscent of a tender broccoli stalk, yet with a distinct crispiness. Tossed in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper, the natural flavors get a chance to shine. Adding freshly grated Parmesan elevates the dish, providing a delightful contrast of creamy, nutty notes to the simple vegetable base.

Health Benefits

Beyond the taste, Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan is laden with health benefits that make it a wise choice for family meals. Kohlrabi is low in calories yet rich in nutrients, particularly fiber, vitamin C, and potassium. This makes it an excellent choice for promoting digestive health and boosting the immune system. Olive oil, known for its heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, adds a nutritious element to the equation. Together, these ingredients create a nourishing dish that’s as good for your body as it is for your taste buds.

This recipe is similar to other grilled vegetable dishes, such as Grilled Asparagus or Grilled Eggplant, which also benefit from a touch of char and simple seasoning to bring out their natural flavors. Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan pairs wonderfully with a variety of main courses. Serve it alongside a juicy steak, a tender chicken breast, or even as part of a vegetarian spread with quinoa and grilled halloumi.

I often find myself reminiscing about the flavors of home when I prepare this dish. The combination of farm-fresh vegetables and straightforward yet delightful seasoning makes Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan an absolute winner in my book. It’s a perfect reflection of my culinary philosophy: simple, honest, and downright delicious.

So, next time you’re looking to add a nutritious and delightful side dish to your meal, give Grilled Kohlrabi with Parmesan a try. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!

What You’ll Need

  • 3 medium kohlrabi bulbs (about 2 pounds), peeled and sliced into 1/4 inch thick rounds
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges, for serving
ALLERGENS: Dairy

Method

Step One

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If you’re using a charcoal grill, make sure the coals are evenly distributed and covered with white ash.

Step Two

In a large bowl, toss the kohlrabi slices with olive oil, salt, and freshly ground black pepper until they are evenly coated.

Step Three

Place the kohlrabi slices on the grill in a single layer. Grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are tender and have nice grill marks.

Step Four

While the kohlrabi is still hot, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the slices. Allow the cheese to melt slightly from the residual heat of the kohlrabi.

Step Five

Transfer the grilled kohlrabi to a serving platter. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve with lemon wedges on the side. Enjoy!
