Why I Love Indian Green Fish Skewers
If there’s one recipe that never fails to win adoration at my table, it’s definitely the Green Fish Skewers. The delicate yet flavorful white fish, combined with a distinctive blend of herbs, yoghurt, and spices, creates a symphony of tastes that leave my guests asking for seconds. This delightful dish is both a nod to my Southern roots, with its trace of coastal seafood inspiration, and a flair of exotic Indian cooking. Populate your kitchen with its aromatic scents and let it transform your mealtime into an extraordinary feast.
A Culinary Adventure
Creating this recipe was like taking a gastronomical journey. Even though, I specialize in Southern comfort classics, my passion to blend different flavors and traditions has no limit. My deep love for Southern fried chicken is pretty well known, but this time I wanted to bring something different on the table. The inspiration to test these waters came from an Indian chef I greatly admire, Sanjeev Kapoor. His ability to incorporate the rich diversity of Indian cuisine into myriad dishes has always been a source of admiration.
Fishing Out the Similarities
Like my Southern Shrimp Boil, the Green Fish Skewers dish is seafood centered, utilizing beautiful white fish as the star of the show. However, the flavor profiles could not be more different. The spices; cumin, turmeric, green chillies, coupled with the freshness of mint, endow it with a hint of Eastern seasoning. The tanginess of lemon in both dishes adds a refreshing touch that can’t be missed.
The Green Fish Skewers would pair wonderfully with a side of fragrant Basmati rice or honey-glazed roasted carrots, complementing the rich flavors of the fish while adding a delightful crunch.
I hope you find as much pleasure in preparing and eating these Green Fish Skewers as I do. Gather your loved ones, roll up your sleeves, and dive headfirst into this enchanting culinary adventure.
What You’ll Need
- 2 pounds of white fish fillets
- 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
- 1 bunch of fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
- 1 bunch of fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped
- 2 green chillies, roughly chopped
- 4 cloves of garlic, peeled
- 1 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
- 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Lemon wedges, for serving
- 6 skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
Method
Step One
Cut the white fish fillets into 2-inch cubes and place them in a big bowl.
Step Two
Start creating the marinade by combining Greek yogurt, chopped fresh cilantro, chopped fresh mint leaves, chopped green chilies, peeled garlic cloves, peeled piece of fresh ginger, ground turmeric, ground cumin, salt, lemon juice, and vegetable oil in a blender.
Step Three
Blend the ingredients until they form a smooth mixture, which will serve as your marinade.
Step Four
Pour the marinade over the fish cubes, making sure that each piece is well coated. Let the fish marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1-2 hours.
Step Five
Preheat a grill to medium-high heat. While the grill is preheating, thread the marinated fish pieces onto the soaked skewers.
Step Six
Grill the skewers for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until the fish is cooked through and has a nice char on it.
Step Seven
Serve the Green Fish Skewers hot, topped with lemon wedges.
