Why I Love Indian Grilled Fish Cubes

Being a food blogger of French heritage but with a heart full of Creole fire for cooking, there’s a special love I hold for the myriad flavors of cuisine from across the globe. Today, the recipe that captivates my culinary senses and creativity is none other than the Indian favorite, Grilled Fish Cubes. As I bask in the rich aromatic spices and tangy flavors of this dish, the balance between its strong flavor profile and the delicate nuances of the fish is what makes me fall in love with the recipe, time after time.

Grilled Fish Cubes

A .Love for Spice

There’s something truly special about Indian cuisine, possibly a reason why it has piqued the interest of culinary giants like Gordon Ramsay. The liberal use of spices to create an array of flavors, textures, and even colors, is an art that has been perfected over centuries. In the Grilled Fish Cubes recipe, the combination of turmeric, red chili, and garam masala powder creates a vibrant and flavorful marinade that imparts a depth of flavor to the fresh white fish cubes. Being a lover of spice and heat in my cooking, I am drawn to the rich and aromatic warmth that these spices bring to the dish.

The Element of Surprise

While the spice blend might be the star of the dish, there’s an underlying note of surprise in the form of the gram flour or Besan. This ingredient, while overlooked, adds that subtle nutty flavor and a beautiful crust on the fish cubes when grilled. Just as a touch of a secret ingredient can enhance a French éclair or a New Orleans beignet, the Besan in this recipe does something similar, making the grilled fish cubes all the more enticing.

Perfect Companions

As with any great dish, the Grilled Fish Cubes can truly come alive when paired with the right sides. A grilled corn salad or perhaps a fresh yoghurt dip would complement this dish perfectly. However, the versatility of this recipe is really where its charm lies. These grilled fish cubes could also be included in a wholesome fish taco or as an innovative topping for a grilled flatbread.

In the end, as a professional food blogger, I am drawn to recipes that not only taste divine but also inspire me to innovate and explore beyond the known boundaries of cooking. The Grilled Fish Cubes recipe has made me fall in love with Indian cuisine more than ever. It’s a true testament to the flavorful diversity that the wide culinary world offers.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 lbs white fish fillets, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons gram flour (Besan)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala powder
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 2 Lemons, cut into wedges, for serving
ALLERGENS: Fish, Olive oil

Method

Step One

Start this recipe by marinating the fish. Take the fish cubes in a large bowl, add lemon juice and a pinch of salt to it. Mix everything well and set it aside for about 15 minutes.

Step Two

In a separate bowl, whisk together olive oil, gram flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, ginger paste, garlic paste, Greek yogurt and salt according to your taste. Make sure all these ingredients are mixed well to form a smooth, thick paste.

Step Three

After the fish has been sitting for 15 minutes, add the prepared spice paste to the fish. Mix well, ensuring that every piece of fish is coated evenly with the marinade. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. The longer, the better!

Step Four

Preheat the grill to medium heat. If you’re using a grill pan, heat it over medium heat on the stove. Thread the marinated fish cubes onto skewers and lightly brush them with a bit of oil.

Step Five

Place the skewers on the grill. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Don’t forget to turn them occasionally to cook evenly.

Step Six

Once done, remove the fish cube skewers from the grill. Sprinkle some fresh coriander leaves over the top for garnish, serve hot with lemon wedges on the side.
