If you take a quick perusal through any of my past recipes, you’ll quickly come to realize that I have a deep-seated love for crafting fresh, flavorful, and health-conscious dishes that are inspired by my West Coast origins. This Mamey Apple Salsa recipe that I’m sharing with you today truly embodies all aspects of my cooking philosophy.
Bringing the West Coast to Your Kitchen
Like many of my recipes, this salsa is distinctly Californian. It reminds me of sunny afternoons spent in farmers markets in my sunny home state, looking at the array of colorful fruits available. One of the absolute joys about being based in the West Coast is the access to a fantastic array of fresh, local produce, and I sincerely hope that in sharing this recipe, I can help bring a slice of California to your dining table.
The Magic of Mamey
At the heart of this Mamey Apple Salsa is, of course, the mamey fruit. Mamey is a delicious and vibrant tropical fruit with a uniquely sweet flavor that pairs wonderfully with the tart apples and spicy jalapenos in this dish. Not widely known, mamey also packs a nutritional punch, filled with a wealth of vitamins and fiber that will leave you nourished and satisfied. This is exactly my kind of comfort food – delicious, refreshing, and healthy, a perfect blend of what I aim for in my recipes.
Perfect Pairings
Not only is this Mamey Apple Salsa a delightful dish on its own, it’s also wonderfully versatile. I recommend serving it atop a freshly grilled chicken breast or fish filet, or even just with some crispy tortilla chips for a light and yet satisfying appetizer. If you’re a fan of classic apple salsa or grilled fruit salsa, you’re sure to love the unique twist that the tropical mamey brings to this dish.
So why do I love this recipe? It’s a delightful reminder of how beautiful and delicious meals can be when they honor the natural goodness of fresh ingredients. Each bite is a blend of sweetness and spice, creating an explosion of flavors that’s the perfect embodiment of the California culinary scene. I can’t wait for you to share this dish with your friends and family and experience the love and care put into making it. Happy cooking!
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups diced mamey fruit
- 1 cup diced apple
- 1/2 cup diced red onion
- 2 hot jalapeno peppers, diced
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Method
Step One
Start by thoroughly washing your fruit. Then put on your cutting board and dice the mamey fruit and apple into bite-sized pieces. Once this is done, you should put these evenly diced pieces aside.
Step Two
Next, take your red onion, peel it and dice it into small pieces. Do the same thing with your hot jalapeno peppers but make sure to remove the seeds to not make the salsa overly spicy.
Step Three
Take your fresh bunch of cilantro, wash it properly and then chop it finely.
Step Four
Now it’s time to assemble everything. In a large bowl, put the diced mamey, apple, red onion, jalapeno peppers and the chopped cilantro.
Step Five
Once all the ingredients are in the bowl, add the fresh lime juice, olive oil, salt and black pepper.
Step Six
The final step is to stir all the ingredients together until everything is well combined. Adjust the seasonings according to your taste and your Mamey Apple Salsa is ready to serve!
