One of my absolute go-to dessert recipes is the delectable Black Sapote Brownies. As a Texas native, I adore how this recipe blends the familiar comfort of a classic brownie with the unfamiliar, all while enriching it with tropical fruit. The use of Black Sapote – sometimes lovingly nicknamed as the ‘Chocolate Pudding Fruit’ not only gives a unique twist to a quintessential dessert but cranks up the health quotient as well.

Black Sapote Brownies

A Tex-Mex Twist on Traditional Brownies

Being a vibrant crucible of cultural cuisines, Texas essentially shaped my culinary creativity. My love for combining traditional Southern recipes with innovative, global flavors was deeply inspired by my Texan upbringing. Black Sapote Brownies is no exception. It’s similar to traditional brownie recipes, but the addition of Black Sapote introduces a flavor profile that’s both foreign and fascinating. Coupled with familiar ingredients like cocoa, butter, vanilla, and sugar, it becomes an exemplary blend of the old and the new.

The Unexpected Joy of Healthy Indulgence

The fact that these brownies are delicious beyond words isn’t the best part, it’s actually the health benefits. With Black Sapote as one of its primary ingredients, it is packed with vitamins A and C, plus a healthy dose of dietary fiber and potassium. While most dessert recipes might make you worry about the calorie count, Black Sapote Brownies make you relish in the flavor and nutrition it offers.

These rich, fudgy brownies not just work well with a broad spectrum of dishes like post-barbecue meats and savory Tex-Mex classics; they equally shine as standalone delicacies. Enjoy them with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of salted caramel for an extra layer of indulgence.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup ripe black sapote pulp
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
ALLERGENS: eggs, milk, walnuts, gluten, soy

Method

Step One

Firstly, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper, for ease of removal following baking.

Step Two

Next, combine the ripe black sapote pulp and the two eggs in a large bowl, mixing together thoroughly. The consistency should be smooth, ensuring that the black sapote is well blended with the eggs.

Step Three

Add the 1 cup of white sugar, the 1/2 cup of melted unsalted butter and the teaspoon of vanilla extract to your sapote-egg mixture and stir until the ingredients are fully combined.

Step Four

In a separate bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, the 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, the 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder and the 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Stir these dry ingredients together until they are evenly mixed.

Step Five

Gradually add the dry mixture into the black sapote mixture, stirring constantly. Make sure to mix well each time you add more of the dry ingredients, to ensure that they are evenly distributed in the batter.

Step Six

If desired, fold in the chopped walnuts and chocolate chips. While these ingredients are optional, they add a nice texture and extra flavor to the black sapote brownies.

Step Seven

Spread the batter evenly into your prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. The brownies are done when a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs clinging to it.

Step Eight

Allow the brownies to cool fully in the pan before cutting and serving. Enjoy your delicious and unique Black Sapote Brownies!
