Why I Love Greek Bifteki

Delicious Greek Bifteki

There’s something quite magical about Bifteki that truly steals my heart. From the first time I tasted this delectable Greek dish, I was captivated by its rich and complex flavors. Combining ground beef and pork with a careful selection of herbs and spices, bifteki is a savory masterpiece that brings the essence of Mediterranean cuisine straight to your plate.

A Fusion of Cultures

Growing up in the sunny valleys of California, I was surrounded by a myriad of fresh ingredients and diverse culinary influences. However, it was my travels and encounters with different cuisines that truly shaped my culinary journey. This recipe for bifteki was inspired by renowned Greek chef Diane Kochilas, whose passion for traditional Greek flavors is incredibly infectious. You can check out more of her amazing recipes here.

In essence, bifteki reminds me of many dishes I adore, such as American meatloaf with its comfort food vibe, or Italian meatballs with their aromatic seasonings. However, it’s the addition of fresh parsley, mint, and feta cheese that sets it apart and adds a distinctive Greek twist. The spices like oregano, cumin, and a hint of cinnamon bring an unexpected depth that takes you on a flavor journey through beautiful Grecian landscapes.

Perfect Pairings

Bifteki pairs beautifully with a variety of side dishes, making it a versatile main course. Serve it with a simple Greek salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and red onion dressed in lemon juice and olive oil. Add a side of roasted vegetables or a tzatziki sauce to bring even more freshness to the meal. If you are a fan of Mediterranean flavors, you might also enjoy it alongside some Moussaka or even tucked into a warm pita with some hummus.

Taking the time to prepare bifteki at home allows me to share a piece of Greek culinary tradition with my children, integrating the richness of different cultures into our daily lives. It’s a recipe that’s not only hearty and satisfying but also deeply connected to the vibrant Mediterranean way of life. Whether you’re enjoying it on a family weeknight or impressing guests at a weekend gathering, bifteki is a dish that brings warmth and joy to the table.

ALLERGENS: Bread (gluten), Feta cheese (dairy), Egg (egg)

Method

Step One

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, fresh parsley, fresh mint, breadcrumbs, and crumbled feta cheese.

Step Two

Add the large egg, olive oil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, ground cumin, and ground cinnamon to the meat mixture.

Step Three

Using your hands, mix all the ingredients together until well combined. Ensure that the spices and herbs are evenly distributed throughout the meat mixture.

Step Four

Shape the meat mixture into oval-shaped patties, about the size of your palm. You should get around 10-12 bifteki patties from this mixture.

Step Five

Heat a grill or a large skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, you can add a small amount of olive oil to prevent sticking.

Step Six

Cook the bifteki patties for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are fully cooked through and have a nice, browned crust.

Step Seven

Serve the biftekis hot, with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the patties. Enjoy your meal!
